Bordeaux 'Baroness' Philippine de Rothschild dies at 80
Philippine de Rothschild, an energetic and self-certain grande dame of Bordeaux wine who halted an acting career to run vineyards owned by the family dynasty, has died, her company said Sunday. She was 80.
She died Friday in a Paris "from the effects of a serious operation", winemaker Baron Philippe de Rothschild SA said in a statement, without specifying further.
De Rothschild, who cracked a male-dominated wine industry to become company chairwoman and was known by many as simply "The Baroness," understood the ups and downs of bearing one of Europe's best-known family names: As a girl in Nazi-occupied France, she used her mother's maiden name; as a professional actress, she took a stage name.

10 dead after bus crashes in Bolivia; Canadians among those injure
Bolivian police say eight foreign tourists are among the 10 people killed when a bus returning to La Paz from the Salar de Uyuni salt flats ran off the highway and crashed.
Police Capt. Gonzalo Carrasco said that another 24 people, most of them foreigners, were injured and being treated in hospitals in Oruro, the closest big city.
Carrasco said the accident occurred Saturday about 290 kilometres south of the capital. He said the foreigners included an Australian, two Swiss, two Italians and a Peruvian and that two of the foreigners could not immediately be identified.
The fatal Bolivian victims included the bus driver.
Carrasco said the injured included Germans, Italians, Swiss, Canadians, Chileans, Peruvians and an Indian.
He said the cause of the accident was under investigation.
Ebola Outbreak: Another US health worker infected with virus
A third American health worker has tested positive for the Ebola virus while working with patients in West Africa, the Christian missionary group SIM said Tuesday.
The group did not release the name of the doctor, but said he had been working in obstetrics at the SIM-funded ELWA hospital in the Liberian capital Monrovia.
Two Americans who also worked at ELWA, Doctor Kent Brantly and nurse Nancy Writebol, were previously flown home from Liberia and successfully treated for the virus.
Chris Brown pleads guilty to misdemeanor assault charges in D.C
Chris Brown was in court today and according to reports, he accepted a plea deal in his Washington D.C. assault case.
Chris Brown pleaded guilty, and telling the judge he just wants this case to go away so he can go on tour. Brown had been charged with misdemeanor assault for punching a man in the face outside his tour bus last October. The judge sentenced him to time already served. Brown apologized in court ... saying the case had derailed his career for the past year. Chris Brown's girlfriend Karrueche was also in the courtroom lending moral support." TMZ reports...
United Nations Reports More Than 3million Have Fled Syria
More than three million Syrians are now registered as refugees and the desperate crisis is only getting worse, the UN’s refugee agency says.
The UNHCR says Syria is now “the biggest humanitarian emergency of our era” with almost half of all Syrians forced to flee their homes.
The majority of refugees have fled to countries neighboring Syria, with most now seeking shelter in Lebanon.
More than 190,000 have been killed in Syria’s three-year civil war.
Opposition groups in Syria have been fighting forces loyal to President Bashar al-Assad since his government violently suppressed protests against his rule in March 2011.
The situation has been worsened in recent months by the formation and advance of the Islamic State group, which now controls large swathes of Syria and Iraq.
The UNHCR says one in every eight Syrians has fled across the border and a further 6.5 million are displaced within Syria. It says more than half of those uprooted are children.
The number of registered Syrian refugees has soared from two million just under a year ago.
Families arriving at refugee camps in neighboring countries are exhausted and scared, with some having spent a year or more fleeing from village to village inside Syria.
The UN agency says the journey out of Syria is also becoming tougher, with many people forced to pay bribes to armed gangs.
Canadian pop star Justin Bieber is in trouble with the law again, this time charged
Justin Bieber charged after ATV crash; lawyer blames paparazzi. Canadian pop star Justin Bieber is in trouble with the law again, but his legal team says that the paparazzi are to blame.
Bieber was charged with dangerous driving and assault on Friday after an ATV collision near his hometown of Stratford, Ont.
Ontario Provincial Police were called to the scene of a collision between a minivan and an ATV on Line 40, east of Road 106, in the Township of Perth East shortly before 3 p.m. Friday
"One of the occupants of the van and the operator of the ATV had words," Perth County OPP Const. Kees Wijnands told reporters Tuesday afternoon. "There was an altercation that took place and as a result of that we ended up arresting Justin Bieber for the offences that were committed."
Ontario police said the ATV's driver was on a road where the vehicle is not allowed, except with a special permit.
Bieber, 20, identified as a resident of Calabasas, Calif., has been charged with dangerous driving and assault.
Wijnands did not comment on the occupants of the van, but said each vehicle had two occupants and Bieber was driving the ATV. He said Bieber’s demeanour when dealing with the police was "very positive."

Cancer Got Notting On Me As Young Bride With Cancer Walks The Aisle
A young mother suffering from terminal illness married her fiancé in an intimate ceremony in Edmonton Wednesday, following a fundraising campaign that helped make the couple’s wedding dreams a reality.
Megan Wolfe, who has been diagnosed with Stage 4 stomach cancer, and Josh Melnyk exchanged vows before family and friends.
Wolfe, 28, and Melnyk have twin boys together and three other children from previous relationships. Their blended family is still recovering from a spring flood that destroyed their home and everything they owned.
To help finance and fast-track their nuptials, a friend created a Go Fund Me crowdsourcing effort that helped pay for Wolfe’s dress, and medical and travel bills. Another fundraising effort helped secure wedding expenses, such as the wedding venue, limousine and cake.
The couple said they are grateful for their special day as they weather hardships together.
After Wolfe was diagnosed with cancer, Melnyk said he researched all the treatment options and potential cures. Wolfe underwent one round of chemotherapy, but doctors realized during surgery that her cancer had spread. Wolfe has been told that chemotherapy and radiation would only prolong her life.

She was, after all, an intensely private person, her daughter said.
But the 83-year-old grandmother’s heart wrenching and public goodbye before taking her own life two weeks ago cast what she felt was a necessary spotlight on her life, her death and the country’s laws around assisted suicide.
“I will take my life today around noon. It is time,” she began.
Facing the ravages of dementia, Bennett made her way to a favoured spot near her home on Bowen Island, just off the coast near Vancouver, and took a lethal dose of barbiturates.
Jonathan, her husband of 57 years, was by her side.
“There comes a time, in the progress of dementia, when one is no longer competent to guide one’s own affairs. I want out before the day when I can no longer assess my situation, or take action to bring my life to an end,” she wrote in the four-page letter posted online by her son after her death — as per her request.
In it, she set out her options as she saw them: a “mindless body” in need of constant care, possibly from her family, or life in a care facility, or suicide.

Some of the shiny new streetcars that will be taking TTC passengers across the city for years to come have finally hit the streets of Toronto.
"It's a huge day for Toronto," said TTC CEO Andy Byford, speaking of the launch on Sunday.
They'll be put to the test on Tuesday, when commuters pack into the new cars.
For now, transit users will only be seeing the new streetcars on Spadina Avenue. They'll show up on King Street within a few years.
TTC spokesperson Brad Ross said it will take about five years to get the streetcars running across the city's full transit network.

Canadians Expose Foreign Worker 'mess' in Oilsands
"When you bring in a bunch of workers who are unqualified to do this job it's only a matter of time before you kill someone," said Les Jennings, who was an ironworker supervisor at the Husky Sunrise plant until a few weeks ago, when he quit in frustration
"People are angry and upset," said journeyman ironworker Johnny Demosten, who is still working at the site. He said many of the foreign workers don't know crane hand signals and other safety precautions.
"If they are journeymen, they are supposed to know the signals. It's pretty dangerous."
There are 344 foreigners — skilled tradespeople and others — currently working on site for the Italian-based company Saipem, under contract to build the multi-billion dollar plant 60 kilometres north of Fort McMurray.
The project is over budget and behind its original schedule.
Hazards cited by inspector
"The errors on that site are repetitive and consistent. Mistakes made over and over," said Ryan Slade, a journeyman electrician contracted by Husky last year, as an on-site quality control inspector."You used to feel like you were part of something. Now, you feel you are part of the mess."
He said he reported numerous serious concerns about safety and poor workmanship, until, he said, managers told him to stop.
"I keep repeating, 'You are having the same problems over and over' and they said, 'Look, we already know this — don't report it anymore,'" said Slade.

The latest grand vision for Toronto FC may not be in tatters. But a team that can't seem to step forward without taking two steps back has hit another huge bump in the road.
Tim Leiweke, CEO of Maple Leafs Sports & Entertainment, and general manager Tim Bezbatchenko both pointed the finger at the 9-9-6 club's recent lacklustre performances in making the move to remove Nelsen two-thirds of the way through his second season at the helm.
"The team obviously not only did not play well but we really didn't show up," Leiweke told The Canadian Press in an interview. "And people pay good money to come see these games."
"We are in a results-oriented business," Bezbatchenko told a hastily called news conference Sunday at the team's north Toronto training facility. "And over the past 13 matches, we've won three games. More important for our fans in Toronto, we've won one game in the past six matches ... I know we can get more out of this group of guys."
Whether Defoe is one of them is unclear.
With 11 goals in 16 games, the star forward has clearly shown that he can score in this league when healthy. But a source close to the situation told The Canadian Press that Defoe doesn't like the direction of the club and wants out, with England's Queens Park Rangers a likely destination.
Bezbatchenko confirmed that the MLS team has received an offer for the 31-year-old England striker, who is currently back in England dealing with a groin injury.
"We're speaking with him (Defoe) and then we'll make a decision," said Bezbatchenko. "No decision has been made. We'll discuss it over the next 24 hours."
With the transfer window closing at 5 p.m. ET Monday, the drama will be over soon.
Bezbatchenko and Leiweke both rejected the notion that Defoe wants to leave.
"We've got an offer on a lot of guys and we haven't bitten on any of them," said Leiweke. "Nor have we haven't bitten on any offer on Jermain. That's just the course of business as the (transfer) window closes on the EPL (English Premier League). And right now, there's no offer that we would take. So I would say that's much ado about nothing.

B.C. teachers' strike cancels first day of school
The long-running labour feud has many parents scrambling to secure daycare spaces, which due to the fast rising demand, are getting scarce.
Janos Stiasny, owner of Wise Owl Montessori Child Care, says he's managed to find spaces for an additional 25 children, but still has a growing waiting list of anxious mothers and fathers.
The 40,000 teachers began their strike in mid-June with contract talks deadlocked over the issues of pay, class size and support staff levels.
Top labour troubleshooter Vince Ready met with the two sides over the weekend but left the table Saturday declaring they were still too far apart to begin mediation.
With no new talks scheduled, and the province saying it won't legislate the teachers back to work, Stiasny says he's had to hire more staff to try to accommodate panicking parents.
"They are scrambling, they are on waitlists, they are saying 'how come they don't have space."'
Stiasny, however, laments there's only so much he can do as requests for his help mushroom, adding that he expects he`ll have to take some time off work to care for his own 10-year-old.

A man born with physical disabilities so severe his head is Upside-down has defied the odds to become an inspirational public speaker.
Claudio Vieira de Oliveira, 37, was born with his neck folded back on itself, as well as badly deformed legs and almost no use of his arms and hands. Doctors told his mother to stop feeding him as a newborn as they believed he had no chance of survival. But Claudio from Monte Santo, Brazil, has overcome his extreme disadvantages to graduate as an accountant and become a public speaker.

Hundreds of private, nude photos of A-listers like Jennifer Lawrence and Kate Upton were allegedly stolen from their iClouds and leaked online Sunday night.
It’s an invasion of female stars’ privacy that some liken to a “sexual violation.” And though act is horrendous there’s hope in dark places: the swift, raucous outcry suggests we haven’t given up our collective sense of decency to social media just yet. And that’s worth something, isn’t it?
Lawrence’s people have confirmed the breach as a “flagrant violation of privacy.” All told, one screen cap of the alleged list of stolen pics names over a hundred celebrities, including Lawrence, Kate Upton, Alison Brie, Avril Lavigne, Selena Gomez, Scarlett Johansson, Rhianna and Kim Kardashian.
The list goes on and on, and with the exception of a mention of a pic of “Allison Brie and Dave Franco,” it’s entirely female.
As Roxane Gay wrote in the Guardian, the leak “is meant to remind women of their place. Don’t get too high and mighty, ladies. Don’t step out of line. Don’t do anything to upset or disappoint men who feel entitled to your time, bodies, affection or attention. Your bared body can always be used as a weapon against you. You bared body can always be used to shame and humiliate you. Your bared body is at once desired and loathed.”
And it’s not just famous women, as Gay notes many women face “revenge porn” harassment online, when jilted lovers post one-private pics for all to see. That’s why this celebrity event strikes so close to home — for many women, young and old, married and single, it could just as easily be them splayed across the internet for all to see.
Yet, there’s hope to be found in the collective condemnation of breaching that final wall of celebrities’ privacy. We may live in an age where you can document and share every moment of your life from dinner to delivery, but users still value the filter. They want the ability to control what is shared and what isn’t and the violation of Lawrence et. al’s privacy speaks to a primal fear that, one day, all of us could be so vulnerable.
That visceral reaction went as viral as the pictures.
Those who tweeted the photos found their accounts suspended, while many shared their disgust over the leak.

What Are We Doing in Canada to Prevent Sexual Assault on Campus?
In the U.S., a sexual assault survivor can choose whether they would like the incident managed by the university or the state. In Canada, universities are not left with the arduous task of deciding the fate of the victim or the perpetrator. Since the introduction of Title IX, universities in the U.S. have now created prevention, education, and awareness programs to help shine light on what is tragically affecting one in four women during their time at post-secondary education.
This increased intervention in sexual assault on university campuses made me wonder -- are we doing enough in Canada to prevent similar outcomes? Are we doing enough to prevent sexual assault and ensuring the safety of young women in our country? Very few universities in Canada offer any sort of education surrounding consent, definitions of sexual assault, resources or awareness about the matter. In addition, very few universities even have sexual assault centres or sexual assault counselors at the university. Does this mean that sexual assault does not exist on Canadian campuses?

Joan Rivers Update: Doctors Fear Stroke And WheelChair Situation
Doctors fear stroke could leave Joan Rivers 'either a vegetarian or in a wheelchair' as they begin process to bring her out of coma. According to Daily Mail, doctors at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City, yesterday Sunday August 31st started the process of bringing her out of her medically-induced coma, but fear she could be left as 'a vegetable' or 'needing a wheelchair' as they battle to save her life. The waking-up process will take until tomorrow Tuesday September 2nd.
"There is real concern that the part of the brain that controls motor skills may have been compromised leaving her as either a vegetable or in a wheelchair,' a source close to the family said
"Rivers would not want to live unless she could enjoy 'a full and active life. ... (She) would never want to be a burden on anyone' another family friend said
The 81-year-old was having surgery on her vocal cords at a clinic in NYC when she suddenly stopped breathing during the procedure on Thursday August 28th.
