Quebec Ebola Patient Is being Tested For Possible Risk Of Virus Spreading

A patient at a hospital in Quebec’s Lanaudiere region is being tested for Ebola, but the region’s health authority says the individual is at a low risk of having the virus.

The patient started to have a fever and diarrhea 16 days after returning from an Ebola-stricken part of Africa, a time gap the region’s public health director says considerably reduces the chances of infection.

Muriel Lafarge says all the standard isolation protocols have been put in place to monitor the patient, whose gender and identity have not been released.

Toronto police get help from US officials on mosque murder

The men are strangers not only to the mosque, but to Toronto. They're police officers from Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Mohamed Abdullahi and Abdiwahab Ali are the first Somali refugees in the U.S. to become police officers.

Their neighbourhood in Minneapolis was crime ridden in the late 2000s. Dozens of young men had also left the city to join foreign extremist groups.

Harvard university to change sexual assault policies after federal investigation

Harvard University has agreed to make changes to its sexual assault policies and review some cases after an investigation found its law school had handled victim complaints poorly, the U.S. Department of Education said on Tuesday.

The agreement with the Ivy League school is part of the Obama administration's push to curb sexual violence in U.S. colleges and coax schools to get tougher in handling cases.

The Education Department's Office of Civil Rights found that Harvard Law School had failed to appropriately respond to two student complaints of sexual assault.

"In one instance, the Law School took over a year to make its final determination and the complainant was not allowed to participate in this extended appeal process, which ultimately resulted in the reversal of the initial decision to dismiss the accused student and dismissal of the complainant's complaint," the department said in its announcement.

Alberta probe RCMP shooting

The investigation into a Christmas Day shooting by police in Alberta will be handled by the province’s police watchdog.

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team says in a news release that RCMP officers shot a lone male on Thursday morning in Vegreville when they were investigating a complaint about a robbery at an ATM machine.

They say one shot was fired, and that the male suffered a non-life-threatening gunshot wound.

The provincial team says a replica firearm has been recovered from the scene, but they say the initial complaint about the robbery appears to have been false.

They say RCMP are handling the investigation into the false robbery complaint.

The news release says the identity of the person who was shot is not being released.
 

Police Officer From Saskatchewan Charged With Child Porn Violations

A Mountie in Saskatchewan is facing charges of accessing and possessing child pornography.

The 31-year-old officer, who has been with the force for more than four years, was stationed at Fond du Lac.

RCMP say computer devices were seized during a search of the man’s home in the remote northwestern community on Oct. 16.

He was removed from the detachment and suspended with pay, but charges were not laid until yesterday following an investigation by the Saskatchewan Internet Child Exploitation Unit.

Apple Canada To Hand Over Documents To Competition Bureau Under Court Order

Apple Canada Inc. has been ordered to hand over "relevant" documents to the Competition Bureau related to an investigation into whether Apple uses anti-competitive measures to push the sale of its iPhones.

Wednesday's ruling by Chief Justice Paul Crampton of the Federal Court of Canada comes about a week after the bureau filed an application to require the Canadian subsidiary of the U.S. computer giant and smartphone maker to provide written and electronic records as far back as Jan. 1, 2011.

The documents, which include contracts with retailers and with wireless carriers concerning the sale of phone handsets, must handed over within 90 days, according to the 14-page ruling.
