First Openly Gay NFL Player Michael Sam Cut by Rams, But His Story's Not Over

Mikesam

Michael Sam became the first openly gay player picked in the National Football League Draft this May. In August, he became the first openly gay player to play in a pre-season game, performing well.

But the St. Louis Rams cut Sam on Saturday just before the start of the NFL regular season, so making more history will have to wait.

The Rams announced the move on Saturday afternoon, the deadline for teams to finalize their 53-man rosters before the 2014 NFL season kicks off on Sept. 4.

Sam was the mighty Southeastern Conference's defensive player of the year last season at Missouri, but doubts about what position his speed and size would let him play in the NFL clouded his pro future, possible questions surrounding his sexual orientation aside.

In four pre-season games, Sam registered three sacks and 11 tackles. But working against him were the Rams' surplus of quality players on the defensive line, as well as an impressive showing by Ethan Westbrooks, an undrafted rookie from tiny West Texas A&M who made the Rams' final roster.

Westbrooks essentially made the cut over Sam.

So what comes next for Sam? Time will tell, but there are a few scenarios. Any NFL team is free to sign Sam now, after he was cut by the Rams. They could put him on their 53-man roster or 10-man practice squad of players who practice with the team, but don't play in games, and have an inside track on eventually getting a call-up. The Rams could also sign Sam to their practice squad. Given his solid pre-season performance, it's likely he ends up somewhere.

Saturday's cut is a bump in the road for Sam, to be certain — but it doesn't mean we won't see him or another openly gay player appear in a regular-season NFL game soon. And those Michael Sam jerseys everyone was buying back in May? They're still collectors' items.

UK Woman Allegedly Taken Hostage by Family in DRC “to Cure her Gay Syndrome”

p1170094.jpg

A British citizen has allegedly been taken hostage by her family in the Democratic Republic Congo (DRC) because her family would like to “cure her gayness.”

The woman, 27-year-old Christina Fonthes, is a Manchester-based LGBT activist and a translator. On August 11th, she visited Kinshasa with her younger sister and mother.

However, during the visit, Fonthes’ mother is said to have seized her passport. She was then reportedly told that her family wanted her to stay in Congo so they could help “fix” her sexuality, The Independent reveals.

According to reports, BBC Sports presenter, Jessica Creighton, is Fonthes’ partner. She has been raising awareness about the situation via social media.

Creighton says: “It became apparent that her family were unhappy with her decision to be an out lesbian. They took her passport and want to… ‘cure her of her gayness.’”

She also complained that the British government hasn’t been too swift about handling the issue. However, a Foreign and Commonwealth spokesman says they are providing consular assistance.

According to the UK Daily Mail, Christina is now heading back to the UK following her ordeal.

Poll Finds Canadians Like Trudeau Much More Than Harper

New numbers from the polling firm Abacus show Justin Trudeau has a +9 per cent net favourable rating among voters while Stephen Harper is at -18 points. | CP
It's been a week of bad number for Stephen Harper. First came the news that his party is falling even further behind the Liberals and now a poll shows Canadians have a much more favourable impression of Justin Trudeau.

New numbers from the polling firm Abacus show Trudeau has a +9 per cent net favourable rating among voters while Harper is at -18 points. NDP Leader Thomas Mulcair has a +6 rating. The rating is generated by adding together the percentage of voters who have an unfavourable opinion with those who have a favourable impression.

The online poll of 1,614 respondents was conducted between August 15 and 18 and has a margin of error of +/- 2.5 per cent.

Harper engenders negative feelings among 45 per cent of voters, positive feelings among 26 per cent and neutral/no feelings among 28 per cent. Trudeau's numbers are 38 per cent positive, 29 per cent negative and 33 per cent neutral/no feelings. Mulcair's numbers are 27 per cent positive, 21 per cent negative and 51 per cent neutral/no feelings, a much higher score on the final metric than Harper or Trudeau.

The poll also provides detailed breakdowns of how voters view the three leaders on the metrics of values, judgment, ideas and attitude.

Across all four areas, Trudeau was ranked more favourably than Harper by a wide margin. Trudeau fared better than Mulcair in three out of four (though to a less extent), tying the NDP leader on judgment.

While judgment was the area Trudeau fared least well, he still did better than Harper, with 36 per cent of voters giving the Liberal leader a good/excellent rating compared to 31 per cent for Harper.

Des Hague Agrees To Donate $100,000 In Honour Of Dog He Kicked In Vancouver

The CEO of a multi-million dollar firm caught on video kicking a friend's puppy in Vancouver has been ordered to create a foundation for animals.

Des Hague, who has been identified as the man in a elevator surveillance video, is the CEO of Centerplate, a company that does corporate catering for sports arenas and convention centres in North America.

A video sent to the B.C. SPCA, and obtained by Global News, shows Hague repeatedly kick a dog.
Sade, a Doberman Pincher, is less than a year old and belonged to Hague's friend, said Global.

Centerplate conducted its own internal investigation and review of the video. It has placed Hague on indefinite probation where "any further acts of misconduct would result in immediate termination," said a statement by the company's board of directors.

"We pride ourselves as individuals and as a company on how we treat others — both humans and animals," reads the statement. "The company finds Mr. Hague’s personal behavior unacceptable and outside the bounds of our high standards and expectations of all of our staff."

As a "condition of his employment," Hague must donate US$100,000 to create the Sade Foundation, in honour of the dog he mistreated. He must also complete 1,000 hours of community service with an animal welfare group. Centerplate said it will also donate a portion of its sales to the Sade Foundation.

"This incident is completely and utterly out of character and I am ashamed and deeply embarrassed," Hague said in a Saturday statement, according to The Vancouver Sun. "I have reached out to the SPCA and have personally apologized to the dog's owner

Milos Raonic at the 2014 U.S. Open
Canada's Milos Raonic has claimed his spot in the fourth round of the U.S. Open.

The fifth seed from Thornhill, Ont., struggled at times Saturday but held off unheralded Victor Estrella Burgos of the Dominican Republic for a 7-6 (5), 7-6 (5), 7-6 (3) victory.

Raonic hammered over 22 aces and 52 winners, breaking on three of 11 chances against the 34-year-old -- the oldest man left in the draw -- in the match that took two hours and 45 minutes.

"It was difficult. He's playing well. He's playing with a lot of aspiration," Raonic said his opponent, who was making his New York debut.

"It was a lot of fun, the atmosphere out there. I'm glad that I was able to play well in the important moments. I had a bit of an understanding what to expect. I played him about four years ago now, so I knew him a little bit."

The 23-year-old Raonic will next face tenth-seeded Kei Nishikori of Japan, who defeated Argentine Leonardo Mayer 6-4, 6-2, 6-3.

The Canadian won the last meeting between the two, in the fourth round at Wimbledon, but lost to the Japanese player in Madrid last spring and Tokyo last fall in the Japan Open final.

Demi Lovato on Kim Kardashian and Beyonce Revolutionizing Beauty

Speaking with Access Hollywood last week, actress and singer Demi Lovato, 22, said Kim K and Beyoncé's famous curves have helped refine beauty and made a whole generation of women see it is not all about being skinny, making it easier for women these days to accept and embrace their full figures.
"When I was growing up and when I was a pre-teen, the people that I had to look up to for body image were extremely underweight. They were all very bony at that time and that was the in thing. But now I'm glad I have curves and role models to look up to that also have curvaceous physiques.
'I really credit women like Beyoncé and Kim Kardashian, they completely revolutionized what our generation's view of perception of what beautiful is and I really think that they had a huge impact on that." Demi said.

These Canadians Ain't Loyal, Two Calgary Brothers Join ISIS

Collin And Gregory Gordon, Calgary Brothers, Join ISIS. The federal government must step up its efforts to counter the radicalization and recruitment of young Canadians by extremist Islamic groups, a Calgary imam said Friday.

And Syed Soharwardy said people who return from abroad after a stint with radicals in Syria or Iraq should be under a police microscope as soon as they land.

Soharwardy made the comments following a CBC report that identified Calgary brothers Collin and Gregory Gordon as two more young men who have recently left Canada to join Islamic fighters in Syria.

Not coincidentally, the spectre of homegrown terrorism was a dominant theme in the federal government's annual national security report, released Friday by Public Safety Canada.

Terrorism remains the principal threat to national security, the report concludes, stressing the need to work with communities to counter insidious recruitment efforts on Canadian soil.

Soharwardy, who represents the groups Muslims Against Terrorism and the Islamic Supreme Council of Canada, welcomed the report's conclusions, but chastised the government for falling short of the necessary effort.

"Early intervention is needed and the government has the resources and the tools to do that," Soharwardy said.

"Communities, non-profit organizations, Muslims are working whatever they can with their own resources, but definitely it is the government role to support those activities."

Founder of Alibaba Jack Ma Emerges as China’s Richest Man

Jack Ma, chairman of Alibaba Group Holding Ltd.
The 49-year-old founder and chairman of Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. has a net worth of $21.8 billion, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index. His assets include a 7.3 percent economic interest in China’s largest e-commerce business, which is preparing for what could be the largest initial public offering in U.S. history, and almost half of the parent of Alipay, a separate online-payment service that previously hadn’t been included in his net worth calculation.

Ma is $5.5 billion richer than Ma Huateng, the founder of Tencent Holdings Ltd., China’s largest Internet company by market value. Robin Li, the founder of search engine Baidu Inc., ranks No. 3 in the world’s second-largest economy.

The wealth creation in China has been quite rapid, particularly among entrepreneurs such as Jack Ma that have created businesses that benefit from China’s burgeoning middle class,” said Tony Hsu, a Shanghai-based portfolio manager at Dalton Investments.

Alibaba, which plans to sell shares on the New York Stock Exchange next month, may set its IPO value at $154 billion, according to the average estimate of five analysts surveyed by Bloomberg in July. Ma owns 8.8 percent of the company. After subtracting the 1.5 percent controlled by SymAsia Foundation Ltd., his charitable organization, Ma’s interest in the company is valued at $11.3 billion.
The same analysts said Alibaba’s post-listing valuation could be as much as $200 billion.

"When lions want to overtake a pride, the old lions fight with the new ones. But seeing two lion brothers fighting, one against the other is a very rare sighting. We were very lucky to witness it, and both lions unfortunately ended up with serious wounds. But that's just what happens in the wild and we would never interfere with nature." Laurent said
She also said just 15 minutes after the lions finished scrapping, the triumphant brother went and mated with his lioness as a prize.

Canada is sending a charter plane to repatriate scientists who have been operating the country's mobile Ebola laboratory in Sierra Leone.

The Public Health Agency of Canada says the three scientists remain in good health and appear to be at low risk of having contracted the often deadly virus.

The agency announced late Tuesday that it was pulling the team from a World Health Organization outpost at Kailahun, in eastern Sierra Leone, after learning three people at their hotel complex tested positive for Ebola.

The agency says the three will be assessed by a quarantine officer and officers from Canada Border Services when their plane arrives back in the country.

Once they have been cleared for entry, they will travel to private residences where they will be in voluntary isolation for the remainder of the 21-day incubation period.

For privacy reasons the Public Health Agency is not releasing the names of the scientists and won't say when they will return

A sarcastic tweet from Canada’s delegation to NATO instructing Russians to be mindful of their national borders was apparently itself wrong about the geography of Eastern Europe.

Following the claim by Russian President Vladimir Putin this week that 10 Russian soldiers captured in Ukraine accidentally wandered into the neighbouring country, the Canada at NATO account tweeted out a cartoonish map labelling the two countries “Russia” and “Not Russia.”

“Geography can be tough,” read the tweet. “Here’s a guide for Russian soldiers who keep getting lost & ‘accidentally’ entering #Ukraine.”

Lockdown on US base after soldier turns gun on herself

Army Major General Stephen Lyons speaks during a news conference at the base in Fort Lee, Virginia 25 August 2014

An Army official described the soldier as "enraged" but did not specify what about

A soldier barricaded herself inside an office on a Virginia Army base before shooting herself in the head, Army officials have said.

The unnamed soldier was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital on Monday.

The US Army's Fort Lee base was put on lockdown for part of the morning after a report of an "active shooter".

Maj Gen Stephen Lyons said the soldier was talking to negotiators before firing a small gun that was not her service weapon.

"This situation could've been worse," he told reporters during a press conference earlier on Monday, adding no-one else was hurt.

He described the soldier as "enraged" but did not say what about.

"We are sad for our solider in arms that she faced those types of challenges that she thought she had to resort to those kind of actions," said Maj Gen Lyons.

The soldier held the rank of sergeant first class, and was previously deployed to Iraq in 2007. Army officials said they were withholding her identity until family members were notified.

Gen Lyons told reporters the soldier was alone in a third-floor office while negotiators spoke to her from outside a closed door.

He added those talking to her believed they were making progress when they heard a gunshot.

The all-clear on Fort Lee was sounded at 09:50 local time (13:50 GMT), about an hour after the base went on lockdown.

The cause of the derailment is under investigation.

Malaysia Airlines cuts 30% of employees in bid to save company

Malaysia Airlines will cut almost a third of its 20,000-person workforce and cut back its global route network as part of a radical $1.9 billion US restructuring after two devastating jetliner disasters.

The 42-year-old company will be delisted by the end of the year under the broad revival plan announced by state fund Khazanah Nasional on Friday. It aims to bring long-elusive efficiency and global standards to the loss-making carrier.

"Estimation of a workforce of approximately 14,000 represents a net reduction of 6,000 or a net reduction of 30 per cent from approximately 20,000 current staff in total," Khazanah managing director Azman Mokhtar told reporters in Kuala Lumpur.

The 6,000 job cuts were more than expected by the industry and mark a painful new blow for staff after a traumatic year for the national flag-carrier and the Southeast Asian country.

Khazanah, which currently holds a 69 per cent stake in the airline, said it would invest in "reskilling" those who lose their jobs. It pledged to set up a panel to improve often rocky relations between unions and management.

Khazanah will take 100 per cent ownership when the carrier is delisted and said that it would buy out minority shareholders.

"The assignment and the object of this exercise is to support the revival of the national carrier but not at any cost; this is the key actually," Mokhtar said.

Under the restructuring plan, which was approved by Malaysia's cabinet this week, the airline's assets and liabilities will be transferred to a new company with Khazanah injecting up to $1.9 billion US.

Canadian Troops Off to Europe To Rein In Putin’s Ambitions

Corporal Jason Nolet, Sergeant Brent Currie and Corporal Mohammad Balouch from the Land Task Force of Operation REASSURANCE did a wings exchange jump from a CC-130J Hercules from 436 Squadron Trenton in Eastern Europe on August 21, 2014.
The Canadians are to be part of an urgent NATO plan to try to rein in Vladimir Putin’s revanchist ambitions in eastern Europe, which appears to be rapidly transitioning this week from a covert to an overt war for eastern Ukraine with the opening of a new front south of Donetsk.

The alliance is following the Pentagon’s script for the forward deployment of U.S. Marines in northern Australia because of its relative proximity to China. NATO’s civilian boss, Anders Fogh Rasmussen, told me in an interview a couple of months ago that what the Marines were doing Down Under was a likely model for alliance deployments in eastern Europe.

Rasmussen confirmed to European journalists ahead of next week’s NATO summit in Wales that the alliance will open new bases in eastern Europe. Troops from countries such as Canada will rotate through these bases for stays of several months at a time. But Rasmussen went further, declaring the creation of a spearhead within an existing rapid reaction force to deal with potential emergencies in the east.

By not permanently stationing troops in Poland or the three Baltic statelets, NATO will save on some infrastructure costs as well as the considerable costs of housing and schooling the troops’ families.

U.S. Open: Eugenie Bouchard, Milos Raonic Advances To Round 3

Eugenie Bouchard advances to 3rd round of U.S. Open

Canadians Milos Raonic and Eugenie Bouchard reached the third round of the U.S. Open on Thursday, earning tough night-time victories in swirling wind against dangerous opponents.

Fifth-seeded Raonic took revenge for a summer loss on grass in Halle, Germany as he defeated German qualifier Peter Gojowczyk 7-6 (4), 5-7, 6-4, 7-6 (3) in New York.

Wimbledon women's finalist Bouchard, from Westmount, Que., needed a lift in the third set to defeat Romanian Sorana Cirstea 6-2, 6-7 (4-7), 6-4. Bouchard will face Czech Barbora Zahlavova Strycova in the third round.

The 20-year-old Bouchard won the first set and twice recovered from a break down in the second set as her fighting spirit at the big events came into evidence. But Cirstea, ranked 80th after standing 21st a year ago, took the match into a third set as midnight approached.

"I had to battle in the second set, her game was getting a lot more solid," said Bouchard. "I believed in myself. I told myself to keep fighting. I started taking the ball early and it paid off."

The seventh seed went up an early break in the final set but lost it, only to break the Romanian back for 4-3 on a double-fault.

Cirstea saved a match point in the ensuing game before Bouchard finally served out the winner after more than two hours a game later, firing off back-to-back service winners.

"It's so special to play my first match on Ashe stadium at night," said Bouchard . "I'm so excited to have a chance to play another match. I want to improve my tennis for that one."
