FIFA World Player Ronaldo dumps model girlfriend because she snubbed his mom's surprise 60th birthday party

Cristiano Ronaldo dumped his model girlfriend – after she apparently refused to attend a surprise birthday celebration for his mum.

The football superstar, 29, spent New Year’s Eve alone with his son when Irina Shayk decided not to attend the 60th birthday party, it was claimed today .

The couple rowed and the former Manchester United star – this week voted the best player in the world – decided to end his romance with the Russian beauty.

Her relationship with his mum Dolores Aveiro and sisters Elma and Katia was at the centre of tensions, according to reports in Portugal.

In signing five-foot-four Italian playmaker Sebastian Giovinco from Juventus, Toronto FC has once again raised the bar for Major League Soccer.

But given Toronto’s eight-year history of failure on the pitch, luring a European star in his prime to North America won’t mean much unless the rich kid on the MLS block can finally win on the field and make the playoffs.

The 27-year-old Giovinco, nicknamed the Atomic Ant, will join Toronto in July after his contract with Italy’s Juventus expires.

While Toronto opted to forgo props to highlight the Giovinco acquisition — unlike the double-decker bus parked outside the unveiling last January of now-departed England striker Jermain Defoe — Toronto general manager Tim Bezbatchenko was talking big about the little Italian.

A day after denying rumours he was considering leaving Barcelona, Lionel Messi cast new doubts about his future at the club on Monday.

Messi said at the awards ceremony for the FIFA BAllon d'Or that he doesn't know whether he'll be back at Barcelona next season. He made the comment after being asked whether he'd consider returning to his boyhood club Newell's Old Boys at some point.

Messi said in Spanish that "I am not sure if I will go back to Newell's Old Boys one day," adding that "I am not sure where I will be next year. I have always said I want to end my career at Barcelona but as Cristiano (Ronaldo) said: 'Only God knows the future.' Especially in football where things can change overnight."

On Sunday, Messi told Barcelona's in-house TV channel that he had no intention of leaving.

NFL players union contest Adrian Peterson suspension in court

The NFL Players Association filed a federal lawsuit Monday for Adrian Peterson, asking the court to dismiss an arbitration ruling that upheld the NFL’s suspension of the star running back.

The petition also requested a court order for Peterson’s immediate reinstatement, arguing that Peterson has served far more than what’s allowed by the collective bargaining agreement between the league and the players. Attorneys for the NFLPA asked to expedite the case in Minnesota, where the union has often gone to contest labour matters with the NFL.

Commissioner Roger Goodell suspended Peterson without pay for the last six games of this season and through at least April 15, the result of the child-abuse case that has kept the 2012 NFL MVP out of all but one game this year. Harold Henderson, the arbitrator appointed to hear Peterson’s appeal, affirmed the entirety of Goodell’s decision Friday.

The union argued that Henderson’s decision was biased and overreaching, contrary to “fundamental principles of notice, fairness and consistency” and the essence of the CBA.

Henderson, the former NFL executive vice-president for labour relations, has heard 88 appeals, according to the league.

In the petition, the NFLPA said Henderson “ran roughshod over the required procedural protections of the CBA” and “summarily rubber-stamped the unlawful process and punishment of Mr. Peterson” with his ruling.
