Tom Renney named as president and CEO of Hockey Canada

Hockey Canada's board of directors officially announced Tuesday that Tom Renney, a native of Cranbrook, B.C., will succeed Bob Nicholson as the president and CEO of Hockey Canada.

According to a release, Renney will "oversee all elements of the organization" in his new role, including everything from hockey development, to corporate sales and events and marketing.

The 59-year-old Renney has served as the head coach of three NHL teams - the Vancouver Canucks, New York Rangers and Edmonton Oilers. Of late he's spent two years as an associate coach on the Canadian men's ice hockey team's current head coach Mike Babcock's staff with the Detroit Red Wings.

"This is not only an honour for myself, but it is all that and more for my family," said Renney in a release from Hockey Canada. "We are thrilled to be joining this great organization. I am excited to dedicate my efforts to grassroots, development and high performance hockey with a volunteer base second to none in the world."

Renney will have major shoes to fill. Nicholson's tenure as the president and CEO of Hockey Canada was a golden era of unparalleled Olympic success - including three gold medals for the men's team, and four for the women.
