Federal Government Identifies Remains of WWI Soldiers In Winnipeg

CANADIAN FLAG
The federal government has identified the remains of four First World War soldiers from a Winnipeg-based regiment who killed while advancing on a small village in northern France nearly a century ago.
The defence department identified them in an announcement in Winnipeg on Saturday as Lt. Clifford Neelands, Lance Sgt. John Lindell and privates Lachlan McKinnon and William Simms, all of the Winnipeg Grenadiers.
The men died in the village of Hallu, in the Somme region, which they were advancing to capture following the first attack of the Battle of Amiens in August 1918.
Their remains, along with those of four other soldiers, were discovered in 2006 and 2007 in Hallu — the largest single find of unknown Canadian soldiers since the government launched a casualty identification program in 2006.

ISIS fighters advance in Syria despite US strikes

United States planes pounded Islamic State positions in Syria recently, but the strikes did not halt the fighters’ advance in a Kurdish area where fleeing refugees told of villages burnt and captives beheaded, Reuters reports.

President Barack Obama, speaking at the United Nations, asked the world to join together to fight the militants and vowed to keep up military pressure against them.

“The only language understood by killers like this is the language of force, so the United States of America will work with a broad coalition to dismantle this network of death,” Obama said in 40 minute speech to the UN General Assembly.

Islamist militants in Algeria boasted in a video they had beheaded a French hostage captured on Sunday to punish Paris for joining air strikes against Islamic State in Iraq. The French government said it would not be deterred from taking action against “an association of assassins”.

A US official said the leader of an al Qaeda unit called Khorasan was thought to have been killed in the first day of strikes on Syria. “We believe he is dead,” he said of Khorasan chief Mohsin al-Fadhli, an associate of al Qaeda founder Osama bin Laden. The Pentagon said it could not confirm the death.

Washington describes Khorasan as a separate group from Islamic State, made up of al Qaeda veterans planning attacks on the West from a base in Syria.

Syrian Kurds said Islamic State had responded to US attacks by intensifying its assault near the Turkish border in northern Syria, where 140,000 civilians have fled in recent days in the fastest exodus of the three-year civil war.

Beverage Giants To Cut Calories To Reduce Risk of Obesity

U.S. soft-drinks giants promised to work to reduce the country’s beverage calorie consumption by 20 percent by 2025 in a campaign to counter obesity trends.

Coca-Cola, PepsiCo and Dr. Pepper Snapple pledged to provide smaller-sized bottles, and more water and other low- or no-calorie beverages, to the market to help bring down per-person consumption of their high-sugar drinks.

They also agreed to better publicize calorie counts on vending machines, retail coolers and all drink-vending equipment controlled by the companies.

Appearing at an event organized by the Clinton Global Initiative in New York, representatives from each signed a voluntary initiative to employ marketing and consumer outreach to prod consumers to drink fewer sugary drinks and promote calorie awareness.

The goal is to cut calories from drinks by 20 percent per person within a decade.

The initiative comes as Coca-Cola, PepsiCo and others struggle with flagging sales in their home market. Coca-Cola reported flat sales in North America in the most recent quarter.

Regulators in New York City, California and other venues have proposed measures to cut drink size or enhance labeling requirements.

The companies also said they would intensify awareness campaigns and promotion of healthier beverages in communities where there have been fewer options to often sugar-laden soft drinks.

They will retain an independent evaluator to track progress, in conjunction with an advocacy group set up by the Clinton Foundation, founded by former president Bill Clinton, and the American Heart Association.

Public health advocates said the measures did not go far enough.

The Nova Scotia government introduced legislation today that would place an indefinite moratorium on high-volume hydraulic fracturing for onshore oil and gas from shale deposits.
But the legislation would provide an exemption for fracking used for testing and research purposes.
Energy Minister Andrew Younger says the amendments to the Petroleum Resources Act will not provide a loophole for the shale gas industry.

ISIS executes rights lawyer who criticized religious desecration

Militants with the Islamic State group publicly killed a rights lawyer in the Iraqi city of Mosul after finding her guilty of apostasy in a self-styled Islamic court, the United Nations said Thursday.

Samira Salih al-Nuaimi was seized from her home on Sept. 17 after allegedly posting messages on Facebook that were critical of the militants’ destruction of religious sites in Mosul. Her Facebook page appears to have been removed since her death.

According to the United Nations Assistance Mission in Iraq, al-Nuaimi was tried in a so-called “Sharia court” for apostasy, after which she was tortured for five days before the militants sentenced her to public execution.

“By torturing and executing a female human rights’ lawyer and activist, defending in particular the civil and human rights of her fellow citizens in Mosul, ISIL continues to attest to its infamous nature, combining hatred, nihilism and savagery, as well as its total disregard of human decency,” Nickolay Mladenov, the U.N. envoy to Iraq, said in a statement, referring to the group by an acronym.

Canadian CF-18 Fighter Jets To Get Upgrades,

The Harper government says it will extend the life of its aging fleet of CF-18 fighters.
The jets are an important component of Canada's defence and will be updated to keep them flying for another decade, said Johanna Quinney, a spokeswoman for Defence Minister Rob Nicholson.
"We remain committed to ensuring that our brave men and women in uniform have the equipment that they need to do the work that is asked of them," Quinney said in an emailed statement.
"As a result, we will be extending the life of our CF-18 fleet to 2025 to ensure that Canada has a multi-role, fighter jet capability throughout the next decade. The Royal Canadian Air Force needs a fighter strike capability, and our current fleet of CF-18s is fully capable of fulfilling a variety of mission requirements," such as patrol and air-to-air interception.
Four CF-18s are taking are taking part in air policing missions over the Baltic states as part of NATO's efforts to reassure eastern European allies rattled by Russia's annexation of Crimea and interference in Ukraine.

Montreal Canadiens Best Hope to Quash Canada Cup Drought

During last season’s playoffs, Canadiens players couldn’t help but wonder how Montreal might respond if the team won the Stanley Cup.

“The way the city reacts when we win one playoff round, it’s almost shocking,” Max Pacioretty said. “We joke around like, ‘Could you imagine winning a Stanley Cup there and what the reaction would be?'”

P.K. Subban has thought about it.

“It’s scary,” the 2013 Norris Trophy winner said. “It’s scary in a great way. How passionate those fans are, the province, it’s scary.”

Oddsmakers think the current landscape across Canada is scary in a bad way and are betting that the country’s Stanley Cup drought will extend to 21 seasons. But among the seven teams, the Canadiens have the best odds of ending it at 18 to 1, according to the online sportsbook Bodog.ca, which is no surprise given they were the only club to make last season’s playoffs.

The Vancouver Canucks (33-1), Toronto Maple Leafs (40-1), Edmonton Oilers (50-1), Ottawa Senators and Winnipeg Jets (66-1) and Calgary Flames (75-1) aren’t inspiring much confidence to bring the trophy back to Canada for the first time since the Habs did it in 1993.

Montreal came the closest in last year’s playoffs by reaching the Eastern Conference final before losing to the New York Rangers. Beating the rival Boston Bruins to get there was what Pacioretty called the best feeling he’s had in hockey to this point.

Pacioretty knows winning a Cup would be the pinnacle. The stage is set for the Habs to at least be in the running to get back to the same spot with goaltender Carey Price healthy, Subban locked up to a long-term contract and the East looking as wide open as ever.

Al-Qaeda leader warns of revenge for airstrikes

The leader of al-Qaida's Syria affiliate vowed Sunday that his group would "use all possible means" to fight back against airstrikes by the U.S.-led coalition and warned that the conflict would reach Western countries joining the alliance.

The U.S. views the affiliate, known as the Nusra Front, as a terrorist group, but Syrian rebels have long seen it as a potent ally against both the Islamic State extremist group -- which is the main target of the coalition -- and Syrian President Bashar Assad's forces.

Syrian rebels, activists and analysts have warned that targeting the Nusra Front will inject more chaos into the Syrian conflict and indirectly help Assad by striking one of his main adversaries.

The U.S. insists it wants Assad to step down, but is not targeting his forces, which are best placed to benefit from the airstrikes.

In a 25-minute audio recording, Nusra Front leader Abu Mohammed al-Golani portrayed the U.S.-led coalition as a "Crusader alliance" against Sunni Muslims and vowed to fight back.

B.C Trinity Western Law School Accreditation To Be Decided In Referendum

The governing members of the Law Society of British Columbia have voted in favour of holding a binding referendum to determine whether a Christian university's law school should be accredited.
The decision, in a 20 to 10 vote by the society's governors, came after a divisive and emotional hearing Friday over Trinity Western University's controversial policy against sex outside marriage between a man and a woman.
The mail-in referendum is to be held as soon as possible, with results to be released at the end of October.
The hearing followed months of debate on the issue that three other provincial legal governing bodies have weighed in on, with the matter expected to eventually land in the Supreme Court of Canada.
Law societies in Ontario and Nova Scotia have voted against accrediting law students from Trinity, and the university has launched legal challenges of those decisions.

Walmart Blames Tracy Morgan For The Accident That Nearly Ended His Life

tracyEver since the horrific six-vehicle crash that took the life of comedian Jimmy Mack and nearly killedTracy Morgan, we’ve been cautiously and optimistically following Morgan recovery. When last we checked in, comedian Neal Brennan offered a funny anecdote that indicated Morgan is — at least on the humor side — back to his old self.

Which brings us to the inevitably icky part of the saga: the legal proceedings. Morgan sued Walmart back in July, claiming their driver, Kevin Roper, was doing 65 MPH in a 45 MPH zone and had been awake for more than 24 hours (and driving for more than nine consecutive hours) when he slammed one of the company’s trucks into the back of Morgan’s limousine.
Yesterday, Walmart finally fired back, essentially claiming that everything would be okay if Tracy and his friends had just buckled up:

So Wrong! Model Danii Phae Battered By Rapper Boyfriend When Confronted On Infidelity

The dude is 'boyenemy' and not boyfriend. Model Danii Phae wrote on her Tumblr page that she was battered by her ex-boyfriend, a struggling rapper named Justin Joseph aka J$tash. Below is what she said happened to her...in her own words.
"This is very hard for me at this moment in my life to express my heart/mind to the world, but I will say these last few months have been the worst months of my life. I was dating someone (J$tash) that abused me verbally, emotionally and physically throughout the end duration of our relationship. Monday morning on September 15th 2014 my life was forever, changed. A person I thought and believed I could trust, whom I gave my love/time/energy to brutally punched me in my face repeatedly with his fists while I became slowly unconscious covered in blood in his brooklyn apartment bed.

"After he was done he told me to not tell anyone to not tell my friends, He also started to prepare legal action to protect himself in case I pressed charges against him.
