Whistle blower Snowden awarded Swedish alternative Nobel

Edward Snowden has been declared one of the winners of a Swedish human rights award for his disclosures of top secret government surveillance programmes, Al Jazeera reports.
The former National Security Agency contractor on Wednesday split the honorary portion of the 2014 Right Livelihood Award, also referred to as the “alternative Nobel” with Alan Rusbridger, editor of British newspaper The Guardian, which has published a series of articles based on documents leaked by Snowden.
The 1.5m kronor ($210,000) cash award was also shared by Pakistani human rights activist Asma Jahangir, Basil Fernando of the Asian Human Rights Commission and US environmentalist Bill McKibben.
Created in 1980, the annual Right Livelihood Award honours efforts that prize founder Jacob von Uexkull felt were being ignored by the Nobel Prizes.
Foundation director Ole von Uexkull – the award creator’s nephew – said all winners have been invited to the December 1 award ceremony in Stockholm, though he added it’s unclear whether Snowden can attend.
“We will start discussions with the Swedish government and his lawyers in due course to discuss the potential arrangements for his participation,” von Uexkull told the AP news agency.

Canadian Islamic State Fighter Warns Of Possible Attack In NYC

A twentysomething Islamic State (IS) fighter from Calgary who was reported dead is alive and well and says that fellow combatants are planning an attack in New York.

In an interview with Vice News founder Shane Smith, Farah Mohamed Shirdon said IS has as many as 10,000 to 15,000 fighters with ambitions well beyond the Middle East.

"Inshallah [God willing] we'll make some attacks in New York soon with Allah's permission," he said. "A lot of brothers are mobilizing there right now, in the West."

"What are they mobilizing for?" Smith asked.

"Mobilizing for a brilliant attack, my friend," he responded.

Shirdon outlined Islamic State's intentions to fly its flag over the White House, to turn infidels' children into slaves, and to "crucify Benjamin Netanyahu for his war crimes."

"That's maybe, maybe when we still stop," Shirdon said.

Wow! 3D printer replicates complete car body in 44 hour

Using thermoplastic and carbon fibre, a 3D printer created the complete body an electric car.

As far as printing jobs go, this one was on the long side — about 44 hours.

But that’s understandable, because the printer wasn’t just spitting out an English essay or directions from MapQuest. It was a very large 3D printer, and it made a car.

Well, not a complete car, but the complete body of a car. And a completely useable one, too. In fact, it’s already moving under its own (electrical) power.

It is the brainchild of Local Motors, a design firm based in Arizona. To prove the point that building 3D cars is both fast and requires considerably fewer parts than a conventional vehicle, Local Motors decided to print the car body, and then attach the 50 or so parts needed to make it run — all in front of a trade-show crowd at the recent International Technology Show in Chicago.

Petronas Threatens To Pull Out Of $10 Billion B.C. Project

Premier Christy Clark says a threat by Petronas to quit a proposed liquefied natural gas project is just part of negotiations over the province's tax take, but experts say the Malaysian firm's message should be cause for worry.
The Financial Times quotes Petronas chief executive Shamsul Abbas as saying he's ready to call off the $10-billion project to be built near Prince Rupert, B.C., amid a delayed regulatory approval process, plans by the provincial government to impose an LNG tax and a "lack of appropriate incentives."
"Rather than ensuring the development of the LNG industry through appropriate incentives and assurance of legal and fiscal stability, the Canadian landscape of LNG development is now one of uncertainty, delay and short vision," Abbas told the newspaper.

Ebola Update: 1.4 million People Could Be Affected By January – WHO

Director-General, World Health Organisation, Margaret Chan
Director-General, World Health Organisation, Margaret Chan
New estimates by the World Health Organisation and the United States health agency are warning that the number of Ebola cases could rise up to 1.4 million people in Sierria Leone and Liberia by mid-January 2015, unless efforts to curb the outbreak improved significantly.

In its new analysis on Tuesday, the WHO said Ebola cases had been rising and warned that the disease could sicken people for years to come without better control measures.

The WHO’s calculations are based on reported cases only, according to theAssociated Press reports

The UN health agency said the true death toll for Liberia, the outbreak’s hardest-hit nation might never be known since many bodies of Ebola victims in a crowded slum in the capital city, Monrovia, were simply thrown into nearby rivers.

Since the first cases were reported six months ago, the tally of cases in West Africa has reached an estimated 5,800 illnesses and over 2,800 deaths, but the WHO warned that tallies of recorded cases and deaths were likely to be gross underestimates of the toll that the killer virus was wreaking.

Canadian toy stores running short of Lego supply

When parents of Lego-loving children head out to do their Christmas shopping this year, they may have to skip independent toy stores.

Toy suppliers say the booming popularity of The Lego Movie has led to a product shortage.
To address the shortfall, Lego has cut off supplies to independent Canadian children’s stores until 2015, according to some toy retailers.

The business, which recently overtook Barbie maker Mattel as the largest toy company in the world, confirmed that “consumer demand for Lego products has been stronger and earlier this year than ever before” and said it had “shipped more Lego stock to all of our retailers across Canada than in previous years at this same time.”

The company’s spokesperson, Michael McNally, did not say what measures, if any, have been taken to deal with the demand this year, but independent toy store owners say Lego has left many small retailers scrambling for stock ahead of the Christmas rush.

WTF! Airport Worker Stole $150k Diamond Ring And Traded It For $20 Bag of Weed

Former airport worker, 20 year old Walter Earl Morrison (pictured) is accused of stealing a diamond ring worth about $150,000 and then swapping it for just $20 worth of weed.

According to prosecutors (the case is currently in court), Walter had been working for UPS at the Sky Harbor Airport in Arizona when he allegedly swiped a package and hid it under his shirt while loading cargo onto a plane.

Prosecutors said he thought the parcel contained cash but instead found a diamond ring. Of course he didn't know the value of the ring, so he took it a marijuana dealer and bought himself $20 worth of wee in exchange for the ring. The stolen item was traced back to him and he eventually confessed. He was immediately sacked by UPS and arrested for theft.

Fortunately he was able to tell UPS and police who he sold the Diamond ring to. The ring was recovered and delivered to the intended customer while Walter is facing theft charges
