Busted! Two Canadian Women Arrested With Cocaine Worth $29m in Australia While On Worldwide Cruise

Two Canadian women 23-year-old Melina Roberge and 28-year-old Isabelle Lagacé, who were on a dream world wide cruise were on Monday arrested by the police in Australia, according to a release by the Australian authorities.

Authorities say approximately 95 kilograms of cocaine were allegedly found in the suitcases of the two friends and another Canadian man, 63-year-old man, Andre Tamine who was travelling with them when they arrived in Sydney on a cruise ship. All three were arrested in Australia.

According to the Daily Telegraph, the value of the drugs was $30 million Australian dollars, which is about $22 million in U.S. dollars or $29 million Canadian dollars.

Canadian Eugenie Bouchard had to battle in the opening set, but she hit her winning stride in the second to defeat Caroline Garcia of France 7-5, 6-0 on Friday for a place in the fourth round of the Australian Open.

The seventh seed from Westmount, Que., will next play the unseeded Irina-Camelia Begu of Romania (42nd), who beat Germany’s Carina Witthoeft (104th) 6-4, 6-4 later Friday.

Bouchard made her breakthrough in Melbourne a year ago, reaching her first Grand Slam semifinal and duplicating that showing four months later in Paris before playing the Wimbledon final.

The 20-year-old’s win over the 36th-ranked Garcia made amends for a loss to the French player last year in Acapulco.

Iranian national soccer team is currently playing in the Asia Cups finals in Australia and the players have been warned not to take selfies with female fans. Iran says it is against their 'moral principles' and any player caught taking selfies with 'female' fans will be punished. They don't mind them taking selfies with male fans though.

When they play back home in Iran, women are not even allowed to come watch the games. Iran made the threats to players after photos of some of them posing with some female fans, who are mostly Iranian-born who live in Australia, were shared on social media...

Australian carrier Qantas has topped a list of the world’s safest airlines for boasting a clean, fatality-free safety record for more than 60 years.

The latest safety index published by Airlineratings.com comes after a tragic year in aviation history. While 2014 saw the lowest number of fatal airline accidents — 21 — two of the crashes from Malaysia Airlines were unprecedented, claiming 537 lives, editors note.

In 2014, a total of 986 lives were lost– higher than the 10-year average.

A total of 449 airlines were surveyed.

An Australian lawyer has set a world record by stringing up almost 1.2 million Christmas lights in the center of the national capital.

Guinness World Records on Friday confirmed that the 120 kilometers (75 miles) of multicolored wire strung in the shape of three interconnected giant, wrapped Christmas gifts in a downtown Canberra mall was the largest ever image made of LED lights.

Lawyer David Richards assembled the Canberra light show with the help of an army of volunteers and powers it with electricity donated by a local power company.

Eight dead children and a woman suffering from stab wounds were found inside a home in a northern Australian city on Friday, police said.

Police believe the 34-year-old woman with chest wounds is the mother of seven of the children, and the eighth child is believed to be one of her relatives, Detective Inspector Bruno Asnicar said. She was receiving treatment for her injuries and was in stable condition at a hospital.

Queensland state police said they were called to the home in the Cairns suburb of Manoora on Friday morning after receiving a report of a woman with serious injuries. When police got to the house, they found the bodies of the children inside, ranging in age from 18 months to 15 years.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper has sent Canada’s condolences to Australia after the deadly hostage-taking in Sydney.

Australian police ended a 16-hour standoff today when they rushed a downtown coffee shop where a man had been holding 17 people.

The clash left two hostages and the gunman dead and four others wounded.

The prime minister offered condolences to the family and friends of the hostages who were killed.

He also wished a speedy recovery for the injured.

He says Canada mourns with Australia.

ISIS hostage situation going on in Australia cafe

Around 9.30am yesterday morning Dec. 14th, a man witnesses described as wearing a headband covered in Arabic walked into a central Sydney cafe, produced a gun and now holding several people - about 15/20 - hostage inside the cafe. Touching Photos of Phil Hughes Parents During His Funeral

Gregory Hughes pictured very emotional as he carried his son's coffin into his funeral on December 3rd. Phil Hughes died on November 27th two days after he was struck in the back of the neck by a ball during a cricket game in Sydney, Australia. He died just three days to his 26th birthday.

The funeral was attended by over 1,000 people including many national and sporting dignitaries as well as the Prime Minister of Australia, Tony Abbott. It was also broadcast live on Australian TV.

Mother Who Kept Baby Five Days In Drainage Charged

Australian police say a newborn baby was found in a roadside drain after having been abandoned five days before. The child was found uninjured, but severely dehydrated. The mother has been charged with attempted murder. NSW Police/AP

A 30-year-old Sydney mother has been charged with trying to kill her newborn son by abandoning him in a roadside drain for five days before passers-by heard his cries, police said Monday.

The week-old baby was in serious but stable condition in Westmead Children’s Hospital a day after cyclists found him in a 2.5-meter (8-foot) deep drain beside the M7 Motorway in the suburb of Quakers Hill, police said in a statement.

He was malnourished and dehydrated but had no apparent physical injury, police have said.

His mother, Saifale Nai, did not appear in court to answer the attempted murder charge. Her lawyer did not enter a plea and the magistrate formally refused her bail.

Nai will remain in custody until her next court appearance on Friday. She would face a potential maximum sentence of 25 years in prison if convicted.
