Meet Astronaut Julie Payette, the New Governor General of Canada

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau name retired astronaut Julie Payette as the next governor general, the acting head of state and Queen Elizabeth's representative in Canada. Payette, 53, would replace outgoing Governor General David Johnston, 76, whose term is set to expire in September after nearly seven years in office.

Engineer, songstress, mother, pilot, astronaut, linguist, Olympic flag-bearer, scuba diver, governor-general designate. It’s a stretch to imagine any Canadian checking off all of those boxes, but Julie Payette, astonishingly, has managed it.

Standing alongside Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Thursday afternoon in Ottawa, Payette was confirmed to be his choice for the Queen’s next representative in Canada. Both the NDP and Conservative leaders sent their best wishes.

The legendary musician canceled his Los Angeles concerts last weekend due to “severe bronchitis,” and he was snapped at the airport on Wednesday in a wheelchair.

The 71-year-old singer has only performed two shows so far this year – both a New York City.

He took to Twitter on March 24 to apologize to his fans for having to cancel his Los Angeles concerts. He announced the shows would be rescheduled for September.

The singer of one of the most iconic songs the world has ever heard 'When A Man Loves A Woman', Percy Sledge, has died. The Legendary soul singer died today April 14th at his home in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. He was 73 years old.

His longtime agent, Steve Green, said Percy, who was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2005 died after a long battle with liver cancer. He's survived by a wife and 12 children.

Former Canadiens superstar Guy Lafleur is seeking more than $2 million from the Crown and Montreal police in legal proceedings that began Monday.

Lafleur testified in 2007 at his son Mark's criminal case and was the subject of an arrest warrant in 2008 when the Crown deemed he had given contradictory testimony.

He was found guilty in 2009 before the conviction was overturned on appeal a year later.

Lafleur, 63, is arguing the arrest warrant was exaggerated and unjustified and that his life has been adversely affected by the criminal case against him.

RIP Shawn Coates! Former Blue Bombers, CFL official dies at 52

Shawn Coates, who worked as a media relations director for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers and later with the CFL’s head office, died Friday night. He was 52.

The cause of death wasn’t immediately known.

Coates worked for the Bombers from 2000 to ’04 before becoming the CFL’s director of football operations. He held that post until 2007.

During his time with the league, Coates established its instant replay program, developed a digital video exchange infrastructure and implemented a cardio-vascular screening program for players and coaches. He also created the CFL’s code of conduct, dress code and sideline policies.

“Shawn’s passion for Canadian football ran as deep as you will find,” CFL president/chief operating officer Michael Copeland said in a statement. “He brought energy, enthusiasm and a winning smile to those around him.

Bill Cosby: dressed in his standup uniform of sweatpants and a hooded sweatshirt boldly emblazoned with the words “Hello Friend.” Inside Kitchener’s Centre in the Square Wednesday night, the embattled icon had hundreds of friends.

“First of all,” he said, then paused: “thank you.”

Cheers and applause filled the theatre, where more than two-thirds of the approximately 2,000 seats were filled for a show that was reportedly 90 per cent sold.

“Secondly,” he said, “I live in Massachusetts. We are known to have cold weather.” Cosby launched into a slightly laborious, long-winded story about cold weather filled with one-liners and a fur hat.

That was it. The ‘thank you’ was the only nod to the fact that these fans were watching the celebrated comedian crack jokes in the midst of a spectacular fall.

Stuart Scott, Legend ESPN anchor dies at age of 49 after long battle with cancer

Legendary Sportscaster and longtime anchor on ESPN Stuart Orlando Scott died today January 4th after a seven year battle with cancer. ESPN announced his death this morning.

Scott, who worked as an anchor for ESPN and ABC Sports for 21 years, was one of the most recognizable figures on US sports television and in July 2014, he received the Jimmy V Perseverance Award at the ESPYs - where he opened up about his battle with cancer.

Hollywood Golden Era Oscar Winner Dies At 104

Actress Luise Rainer, who became the first winner of consecutive Oscars in the 1930s, has died at the age of 104. The German-born star was named best actress in 1936 and 1937 - a feat achieved by only five actors in Academy Awards history to date.

Her achievement made her a force in the golden age of Hollywood cinema, but was also a curse, making her last major film in 1943.

According to her only daughter, she died from pneumonia at her London home.

Austrian Singer And Composer Udo Jürgens Dies Whilst Taking A Walk

DW- The Austrian singer-songwriter Udo Jürgens, whose songs enjoy immense popularity in the German-speaking world and beyond, has died aged 80. His career spanned more than fifty years.

Jürgens died of heart failure on Sunday while taking a walk in the Swiss municipality of Gottlieben, his management team said. He was 80 years old.

The death of the Austrian singer, pianist and composer comes as he was on a tour called "In the Midst of Life" ("Mitten im Leben"), named after his album of the same title.

Montreal Canadiens honour ex-captain Saku Koivu

The former Canadiens captain, who retired after finishing his career with Anaheim, will get one more chance to feel the love when he is feted ahead of a game against the Ducks on Thursday night at the Bell Centre.

There was something special in the way that Montreal Canadiens fans embraced Saku Koivu.

And the Bell Centre crowd showed it again on Thursday night with a standing ovation in a 30-minute pre-game tribute to the former Canadiens captain ahead of a game against the Anaheim Ducks.

The nearly five-minute ovation brought tears to the 40-year-old Koivu, who retired after spending the last five years of his 18-year NHL career in Anaheim.

“I always felt that I was respected as a player and for the way I played the game, but what makes me feel humble was the way I was loved by the fans,” Koivu said before the tribute. “Sometimes you think about why it happened, why they took me as their own.
