Canadian Supermodel, Winnie Harlow Makes History at Victoria's Secret Fashion Show

Canadian supermodel, Winnie Harlow, made her debut at the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show on Thursday, becoming the first model with vitiligo to walk the runway for the lingerie giant.

The 24-year-old and girlfriend of American rapper Wiz Khalifa stormed the runway in a pink underwear set with feather detail and shimmery silver camisole.

'I have to admit, my nerves are a little bit higher than they usually are,' she told People before the show.

'I’ve cried a lot but mostly tears of happiness. This is the first major show I’ve done that will be broadcasted across the world on TV, which raises the stakes big time.

'But I’m more excited than anything else,' she explained.

The 24-year-old dirt racer from Winnipeg made history this weekend becoming the first Canadian-born woman to win a NASCAR-sanctioned race in the United States.

"It has sunk in and it hasn't. I've been smiling for the last two days and I'll be smiling all week," Balcaen said on Sunday.

"This is something I dreamed of, and I believed that I could achieve it and make it happen. For it to actually become a reality and for me to pull off the win was really a dream come true."

Balcaen took the title on Saturday in the seven-car Limited Sportsman Field during the NASACR Whelen All-American Series. This means Balcaen is in the first level of NASCAR, and she said her plans are to make it to the top of the five tiers.

GPS Reality Game Pokémon Go breaks App Store Record for Most Downloads in First Week of Release

Wow! Augmented reality game, Pokémon Go has become the most downloaded mobile app in the history of the App Store in its first week of release, although no concrete download numbers have been made available.

The app, a free-to-play mobile title from developer Niantic in collaboration with The Pokémon Company, was released on July 5th in Australia and New Zealand and a day later in the US. It launched in Japan on Friday.

The game has also sat comfortable in Apple‘s top free and top grossing charts in the App Store, beating out mainstays like Game of War, Candy Crush Saga, Facebook Messenger, and Snapchat.

Avril Lavigne recently discussed her debilitating bout of Lyme Disease after months away from the limelight, and now husband Chad Kroeger has expressed that he’s “very thankful” to have Avril’s condition out in the open.

The 40-year-old rocker shared his relief with KISS FM’s Kyle and Jackie O this week in Australia. “I’m like, “OK the wife has come out and said this and now I don’t have to keep hiding,” he said. “With everyone going, ‘What’s wrong with your wife?’ and me just going, ‘Ah, she’s going to be fine.’

Empire overtakes The Big Bang Theory as No.1 series on network TV

Empire has passed The Big Bang Theory as this season’s No. 1 rated series on broadcast television. Joe Adalian of Vulture tweeted the numbers out, showing that Empire scored a 6.9 and TBBT a 6.7 in the key 18-49 demographic.

Before Empire came on TV, the Big Bang Theory on CBS was the top rated series on broadcast television in the US. Well, not anymore. That title now belongs to Empire on Fox.

New Brunswick's first medical marijuana vapour room has opened in Oromocto, just down the road from 5th Canadian Division Support Base Gagetown.

Marijuana For Trauma Inc. has expanded its Restigouche Road facility to include the new room, saying it is a necessary support for Canadian Forces veterans and others suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

The vapour room will allow those who pay a $5 annual membership fee to try out different machines to vaporize their prescribed marijuana.

New disease in canola found in Canada for first time

John Cotter The Canadian PressA disease that has reduced yields in some European canola crops by up to 50 per cent has been detected for the first time in North America in a Manitoba field.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency said it has confirmed the presence of Verticillium longisporum among canola crop plots at a farm research station in the province.

“The CFIA has taken action to limit any spread of this pest beyond its current location by prohibiting the movement of host material and agricultural equipment used in the trial plot,” Elena Koutsavakis, a CFIA spokeswoman wrote in an email from Ottawa Thursday.

“The agency is also conducting trace-out searches on seed used in the trials and developing surveillance plans around the plot to determine when the pest arrived and if it has spread prior to detection.”

Canadian Gay Couple Becomes First To Be Married In Mennonite Church

New Year's Eve is a special time for many, and for Craig Friesen and Matt Wiens, it was especially meaningful.

The Saskatoon couple was married on Dec. 31 in Osler, Sask., in the presence of family, friends and the church community.

The men's wedding marks a point in history for the Mennonite denomination in Canada. Friesen and Wiens are the first same-sex couple publicly married in a Canadian Mennonite church.

"Our relationship doesn't feel different, but our relationship with our community and with our faith has changed at least a little bit. It was really beautiful and freeing," Friesen said.

Friesen and Wiens are hopeful other LGBT Mennonites will learn from their example that they don't have to choose between their faith and their sexuality.

"Historically, the church has been oppressive to the queer community," Wiens said.

Hollywood actress Blake Lively and her husband Ryan Reynolds welcomed their first child over the holidays but have kept things hush-hush so far.

According to New York Page Six, the 27-year-old actress gave birth to their child near their home in Bedford, NY, just before the New Year. Page Six reports that the child arrived earlier than expected, but we’re told that mom and baby are both healthy and doing well.

Blake Lively and 37-year-old Ryan Reynolds got married in 2012.

Couple Charged With First Degree Murder After Neglecting Hungry Baby In Car Seat To Die

A couple, Ruby Stephens, 23, and Roy Stephens, 48, of Indiana have been charged with first-degree murder for neglecting their 22-day-old baby to die of hunger while strapped in her car seat at the back of their car while they went in to eat at a Florida restaurant. 

The mother who came out hours later to check the baby, found out she was completely unresponsive and cold to the touch and called 911.

The police later arrested the couple and the mother confessed she had strictly breastfed the baby every two-three hours on their long trip to Florida. 

First case of Ebola recorded in Scotland

The first case of Ebola virus has been recorded in Scotland. According to the Scottish government, the Ebola patient is a health worker who arrived Scotland from Sierra Leone today December 29th where she was helping to care for Ebola victims.

She arrived Glasgow in Scotland from London Heathrow airport on a British Airways flight. All passengers on-board the flight are now being traced for examination. Meanwhile the woman has been quarantined at the Gartnavel hospital.

Luka Magnotta sentenced to life imprisonment for first degree murder

Luka Rocco Magnotta remained impassive as one of the 12 jurors who deliberated his fate uttered the word “guilty” to all five charges against him in the slaying and dismemberment of Jun Lin, including first-degree murder.

Magnotta was later sentenced to life imprisonment on the murder charge, with no chance of applying for parole for 25 years.

On the four non-murder charges, the native of Scarborough, Ont., was given the maximum terms allowed under the Criminal Code, ranging from two to 10 years. The sentences are concurrent.

His lawyer, Luc Leclair, told reporters his client was “disappointed” but “relieved.”

“He came here to face the jury, to put his life in the jury’s hands,” said Leclair, who continued to argue that Magnotta is schizophrenic.

Keystone XL pipeline to take first Republican priority next year

Alexander Panetta The Canadian PressA showdown over the Keystone XL pipeline is set for early in the new year, with the Canadian oil project having been anointed as the No. 1 priority of the new Republican-dominated Congress.

A Keystone XL bill will be the first item in the Senate after the new Congress convenes on Jan. 6, the next leader of the chamber, Republican Mitch McConnell, announced Tuesday.

McConnell also said he’ll allow amendments to the bill. That means it could become a venue for horse-trading, as lawmakers from different parties pack it with their own priorities, and increase its chances of becoming law.

“We’ll hope that senators on both sides will offer energy-related amendments, but there’ll be no effort to try to micromanage the amendment process,” McConnell said.

“And we’ll move forward and hopefully be able to pass a very important, job-creating bill early in the session.”
