Maritime storm could dump 40 cm of snow in some areas

CBC
Nova Scotia's famous groundhog prognosticator Shubenacadie Sam is waiting to make his annual prediction Monday morning, but there's no shadow of a doubt that the Maritimes will be hit with another major storm.

CBC meteorologist Peter Coade said this storm is expected to be Nova Scotia's worst of the season so far.

"It will be moving into the Maritimes early Monday afternoon in southwestern Nova Scotia and southeast New Brunswick. Then, it will spread throughout the entire area by the evening hours," he said.

Western Nova Scotia will be hardest hit, Coade said, with between 20 and 30 centimetres of snow. The storm could track inland over Nova Scotia, which will temper snowfalls slightly.

Peter Rakobowchuk The Canadian PressThe wife of a Saudi blogger who was flogged 50 times last week after being convicted of insulting Islam has accused the Arab country of regressing hundreds of years with the way it is treating Raif Badawi.

“My husband was imprisoned for simply expressing his liberal opinions in a country that has gone back to acting like the courts of the Middle Ages,” Ensaf Haidar said through an interpreter Tuesday.

“The Islamic inquisition tribunals that were established in Saudi Arabia are back…and putting an end to the dialogue of religions. Saudi Arabia wants to present an image of openness and tolerance to the West while, at the moment, it imprisons hundreds of people for expressing their opinions.”

Badawi was sentenced last May to 10 years in prison and 1,000 lashes after he criticized Saudi Arabia’s powerful clerics on a liberal blog he founded.

The jihadist movement has declared war on Canada and other democratic countries and there’s no option but to “face that head on and deal with it,” Prime Minister Stephen Harper said in response to the massacre in Paris.

“They have declared war on anybody who does not think and act exactly as they wish they would think and act,” Harper said of the jihadists Thursday.

“And we may not like this and wish it would go away, but it is not going to go away and the reality is that we are going to have to confront it,” he told the media after an announcement on apprenticeship programs in British Columbia.

A vicious Mexican drug gang forced some members to eat the hearts of murder victims as part of a gruesome initiation rite to root out infiltrators, a government security official said on Tuesday, citing witness testimony.

For much of the past year, Michoacan, a mountainous, agricultural state in western Mexico, has been ravaged by fighting between drug gang henchmen and vigilantes who took up arms against the cartels but have since splintered into violent factions.

A mid-December shootout between two rival groups that killed 11 people has reignited fears the government is failing to control the state after flooding it with federal troops and pressing vigilantes into a fledgling rural police force.

A Canadian Forces CF-18 from 400 squadron touches down in Kuwait.
Murray Brewster The Canadian Press
Canada is at war with the Islamic State and will do what is necessary to eliminate the threat it poses, Prime Minister Stephen Harper said Thursday.

His comments came as the military revealed that CF-18s have carried out another seven attacks in Iraq over the last couple of weeks.

A decision to extend the air mission, which is due to end in April, has not been made, but prime minister said when the time comes one of the criteria will be “the kind of risk it poses to our country.”

And Harper said the risk is significant.

Alarming As CO2 Levels Reach their Highest for 800,000 YEARS: Record 400ppm

An unfortunate first: For the first time in human history, the average level of carbon dioxide has topped 400 parts per million (ppm) for an entire month. Many scientists think that the burning of fossil fuels and other material (pictured) is responsible for global warming

  • April’s average carbon dioxide reading was 401.33ppm, according to scientists at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography in San Diego
  • CO2 readings come within a year of scientists warning the amount of the gas in the Earth’s atmosphere could stay beyond 400ppm
  • Earth had carbon dioxide levels of 280ppm before the Industrial Revolution
  • Rising levels of the gas in the atmosphere are thought to be caused by the burning of fossil fuels and therefore responsible for global warming
  • Readings were taken by the Mauna Loa observatory in Hawaii

  • For the first time in millennia, the average level of carbon dioxide has topped 400 parts per million (ppm) for an entire month.

April’s carbon dioxide readings come less than a year after scientists warned that the amount of the gas in the Earth’s atmosphere could surpass the 400ppm marker and stay there.
