One of the alleged perpetrators involved in the massive Yahoo hack that compromised as many as 500 million user accounts purported to be a luxury car aficionado and claimed to have made his first million at the tender age of 15.

According to a federal indictment, 22-year-old Karim Baratov — a Canadian citizen born in Kazakhstan — was used by Russian intelligence officers to gain “access to individual user accounts at Google and other providers (but not Yahoo)” and paid a bounty for providing them with the account passwords. The information was then allegedly used to hack into the email accounts of various political and business leaders in Russia and the United States.

Baratov was arrested in Hamilton, Ontario on Tuesday, the same day U.S. officials indicted two Russian spies and Alexsay Belan, a notorious cybercriminal, who has been wanted for more than four years, and has been arrested before.

Classmates recalled that Baratov began driving flashy cars and wearing expensive clothes in high school.

Federal Government Cut Funding For Sex Crime Prevention Program

CBC
The federal government is cutting funds for a program designed to prevent the most dangerous, high-risk sex offenders from repeating their crimes, just as its own five-year study has found the program dramatically improves public safety and saves money.
The 18 Circles of Support and Accountability (COSA) programs across the country now have about 700 trained volunteers who help safely reintegrate offenders from prison back into the community.
Most sites are now preparing to close after funding from the Correctional Service of Canada ends March 31.

A vicious Mexican drug gang forced some members to eat the hearts of murder victims as part of a gruesome initiation rite to root out infiltrators, a government security official said on Tuesday, citing witness testimony.

For much of the past year, Michoacan, a mountainous, agricultural state in western Mexico, has been ravaged by fighting between drug gang henchmen and vigilantes who took up arms against the cartels but have since splintered into violent factions.

A mid-December shootout between two rival groups that killed 11 people has reignited fears the government is failing to control the state after flooding it with federal troops and pressing vigilantes into a fledgling rural police force.

Two New York City police officers responding to a robbery in the Bronx were shot and wounded Monday night, and a manhunt was still underway hours later for a pair of suspects, authorities said.
The shooting happened just after 10:30 p.m. on East 184th Street in the borough's Tremont section. It was a jarring reminder of the double shooting that claimed the lives of two NYPD officers about two weeks ago in Brooklyn and came the same day the mayor and police commissioner touted the city's record low crime levels.
The officers were near the end of their shift when they and three others responded to a report of a robbery at a small market. A 30-year-old officer was shot in his left arm and lower back and a 38-year-old was hit in his left arm and chest. They were not identified.

Police identify 8 victims of Edmonton mass murder by enraged killer

Flowers and stuffed animals lay on the sidewalk as police continue to investigate the scene where multiple shooting deaths occurred in a north Edmonton home, in Edmonton, Alta., on Wednesday, December 31, 2014. Police have identified the eight people who were gunned down in Edmonton earlier this week by a man who then killed himself. THE CANADIAN PRESS/Jason Franso
Chris Purdy The Canadian PressWhat was it that made Phu Lam so angry that he killed eight people?

The Edmonton maintenance man had been accused two years ago of abusing his wife and lashing out when he realized their eight-year-old son wasn’t his biological offspring. He shot them both Sunday, along with other members of his wife’s family, including a three-year-old niece. Yet he spared two other children who had also been in the north-side home — his toddler daughter and an infant nephew.

Lam dropped the two kids off at a relative’s home the next day, then visited with other family before driving to another house to kill one final target. When that person wasn’t home, he shot dead an innocent woman who happened to be there.

Serious crime offenders among inmates mistakenly released in Ontario

In 2009, a prisoner at the Toronto (Don) Jail managed to escape by passing himself off as another prisoner who was supposed to be released.
Torstar News Service
Prisoners who were supposed to be locked up on charges of attempted murder, sexual assault, armed robbery and assault with a weapon were mistakenly released from Ontario jails during the last six years.

In total, 98 prisoners were freed prematurely between 2009 and 2013, mostly because of clerical errors. Four of these prisoners committed new offences while they should have been behind bars, the government acknowledged for the first time in December.

Mistaken releases have caused public alarm and political controversy in several American states and the provinces of Saskatchewan, Nova Scotia and Manitoba. In Ontario, there has been little discussion of the issue: the releases have been shrouded in secrecy even when a serious offender has been allowed back on the streets.
