Church of Mormon wins fight with BC polygamous leader

James Keller  The Canadian PressA religious leader in a small polygamous commune in southeastern British Columbia has been forbidden from using trademarks belonging to the Mormon church, which has long condemned such fundamentalist splinter groups that continue to practise multiple marriage.

The Utah-based Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints filed a lawsuit in B.C. Supreme Court last year after learning Winston Blackmore had registered the corporate name Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints Inc. in the province.

Blackmore, who was charged last year with practising polygamy, is one of the leaders of Bountiful, a community whose residents follow a fundamentalist form of Mormonism that condones polygamy.

The mainstream Mormon church renounced polygamy more than a century ago and it has taken pains to make it clear it is not connected to Bountiful or a number of similar groups in the United States.

An 18-year-old Ottawa girl who led an operation that trafficked other teenagers using social media such as Facebook and Twitter will serve the remainder of her sentence in an adult prison, a judge determined today. 15 at time of arrest and now 18, Ottawa teen has just under 3 years left in sentence

Kailey Oliver-Machado was sentenced in November to 6½ years in a correctional facility, but Crown and defence lawyers argued over whether she should serve the time in prison or at a youth facility.​

Justice Diane Lahaie heard the arguments from both sides on Jan. 6 and said she needed more time to consider the decision.

On Wednesday, she said Oliver-Machado did a good job finishing her high school diploma while in custody, but a federal penitentiary is in her best interest because she has finished all the rehabilitation courses at the youth facility she has been in since June 2012.

Lahaie also said Oliver-Machado needs special staff and an individual rehabilitation plan so she can be reintegrated back into the community once her sentence is over.

Canada's top-paid CEOs saw their compensation climb at double the rate of the average Canadian between the depths of the recession and 2013, a new study has found.

The country's 100 highest remunerated chief executive officers pulled down an average of $9.2 million in 2013, about 25 per cent more than the $7.35 million they amassed in 2008, said an analysis released Thursday by the left-leaning Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives.

By comparison, the average Canadian income in 2013 was $47,358, about 12 per cent more than the 2008 level.

"It's a sort of a highly visible manifestation of growing income inequality in Canada," said the study's author, Hugh Mackenzie, who crunched the numbers on the CEOs of 240 publicly listed Canadian corporations on the Toronto Stock Exchange.

Three Hong Kong protest leaders to surrender

The three original founders of Hong Kong’s “Occupy Central” protest movement have announced that they will “surrender” to police while some other protesters started a hunger strike and called for a new wave of protests, Al Jazeera reports.

Occupy Central leaders have urged protesters in the Chinese-controlled city to retreat a day after activists clashed with police and forced the temporary closure of a government headquarters.

“As we prepare to surrender, we three urge the students to retreat, to put down deep roots in the community and transform the movement,” said Occupy Central leader Benny Tai at a press conference on Tuesday.

He said the trio would surrender to police on Wednesday in a commitment to the rule of law and “the principle of peace and love”.

ISIS ring leader, al-Baghdadi's wife and daughter detained in Lebanon

The Lebanese army claim they have detained the wife and daughter of ISIS terror group leader, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi as they crossed from Syria nine days ago.

According to Jerusalem Post, the woman identified as Saja al-Dulaimi, an Iraqi, was reportedly traveling with a fake passport when she was arrested and detained in coordination with "foreign intelligence", according to a senior Lebanese political source and security official.

A Lebanese security official said that a DNA test was conducted on the girl traveling with the woman to verify it was Baghdadi's child. It proved positive.

The arrest is a blow to the terror leader as the wife and daughter could be used against his group, especially as a bargaining chip. The terror group has captured many foreigners.

There is currently no immediate reaction from Islamic State websites.

Canada former governor general Michaelle Jean named the first woman leader of la Francophonie

Former governor general Michaelle Jean has been named the first woman leader of la Francophonie and says its members must work closely together to ensure prosperity and stability.

While the organization has concentrated largely on cultural issues over the years, Jean signalled on Sunday that more emphasis will be put on economic matters.

"One of the most ambitious and daring objectives that la Francophonie has ever set for itself is the idea of an economic Francophonie," she told a news conference after being named by consensus at a summit of its members in Dakar, Senegal.

"We need to work together, unite our efforts, especially as countries want growth, prosperity and development, knowing for example that a crisis in Mali is not (just) a Malian crisis."

She said a sharply focused economic strategy can provide "new relevance for la Francophonie."

"Countries, peoples and civilizations came together by doing business together, by exchanging economically together."
