Serena Williams beats Maria Sharapova 6-3 7-6 (7-5) to win the Australian Open title. It is her sixth Australian Open title and her 19th grand slam title.

Ondrej Pavelec thought he had one of his better games. Winnipeg Jets coach Paul Maurice insisted his goalie was selling himself short.

Pavelec made a season-high 46 saves, leading the Jets past the Dallas Stars 2-1 on Thursday night.

“Anything out of my mouth that doesn’t start or finish with Ondrej Pavelec, I’d be doing him and the game a disservice. He was beyond spectacular,” Maurice said. “I can’t remember a game where I saw a goalie have to face that number of A-plus chances and if he did, he never, ever kept them at zero for 59 minutes.”

Michael Frolik scored a first-period goal, and Evander Kane added a short-handed clincher at 7:34 of the third during a four-minute Dallas power play.

Mathieu Perreault said he got some lucky bounces.

Four of those bounces turned into goals on Tuesday, as the Winnipeg Jets trounced the Florida Panthers 8-2.

“Four goals, it’s something very special,” Perreault said. “Obviously, bounces were going my way.

In the four goals, breakaways, (Michael) Frolik shoots it and it bounces right to me … I had a couple chances in the third, too, to get maybe five. It was one of those crazy nights.”

Ohio State Wins College Football Playoff National Championship

Ohio State was done when Braxton Miller got hurt in August.

In a season defined by its resiliency, Ohio State wasn't about to let four turnovers stop it from winning the national championship.

Ezekiel Elliott ran for 246 yards and four touchdowns, the defense limited the impact of those giveaways and the Buckeyes rolled to an impressive 42-20 victory over Oregon in the first ever College Football Playoff  National Championship.

Ohio State was done when J.T. Barrett got hurt in November.

A funny thing happened: Every time the Buckeyes looked done, they kept getting better. And in the new era of college football, that was enough to earn a chance to win a championship.

The last thing the Edmonton Oilers can afford to do with the way their season has gone is to gift wrap a game.

Edmonton's Benoit Pouliot took a four-minute spearing penalty in the late stages of a 2-2 game to allow the Detroit Red Wings to score a pair of power-play goals and emerge with a 4-2 victory on Tuesday.

Pouliot wasn't mincing words following a game that he knew cost his team.

"Pretty stupid," he said. "Mostly I just feel bad for the guys because we played hard, we battled back and then I go do something so stupid like that. It's unacceptable.

"It's a 2-2 game, Detroit in town, then I go do that, with three minutes left. It's just stupid.

King Jon Jones beats Daniel Cormier via unanimous decision at UFC 182

After years of buildup, Daniel Cormier finally got his shot at Jon "Bones" Jones. It didn't go the way he always wanted it to, however, as the reigning champion successfully defended his title at UFC 182 via unanimous decision.

There are many MMA fans, and probably many of his peers, who don't care for Jon Jones.

They say he's fake. They call him arrogant.

And while he may be all of those things, he is also the greatest fighter in the world by far. There is no one close to the UFC's light heavyweight champion, who won four of the five rounds on all three judges' cards to defeat rival Daniel Cormier on Saturday at the MGM Grand Garden in the main event of UFC 182.

Canada semi-final bound after blowout win over Denmark

McDavid had a goal and two assists and captain Curtis Lazar scored twice as Canada blew out Denmark 8-0 Friday night at Air Canada Centre in the quarter-finals of the world junior championship. It was a show of force from the undefeated Canadians, who advance to play Slovakia in the semifinal Sunday.

"It was too much for us to face in Canada with their speed and physicality," Danish coach Olaf Eller said. "We faced an amazing team, which, with their speed and extremely quick transition game, killed us."

McDavid earned player of the game honours and deservedly so. The projected No. 1 pick dazzled in his first game at Air Canada Centre, recording one assist falling down, scoring a goal by deking the goalie out of the net and picking up another assist by turning a defenceman inside out.

Gustav Nyquist didn’t want his Detroit Red Wings to go to the shootout, that’s why he decided to do it all himself in overtime.

Nyquist scored at 4:12 of extra time as the Red Wings defeated the Ottawa Senators 3-2 on Saturday night.

Nyquist carried the puck around the Senators’ zone for close to 30 seconds, circling Ottawa’s net three times before launching a shot from the slot for the winner.

“It was good. Nice to get the win in OT. We haven’t been as successful in the shootout as we want so it’s nice to get the win coming back,” Nyquist said of the win.

LeBron James Miami Return Turn Sour As Heats Beat Cavs 101-91

The return of LeBron James to Miami may have been the biggest story when the Cleveland Cavaliers faced the Miami Heat on Christmas, but it was a happy ending for Dwyane Wade and co., who beat the Cavs, 101-91.

Led by Wade (31 points, five rebounds, five assists) and Luol Deng (25 points, eight rebounds, eight assists), the Heat proved to be too much for James and the Cavs, ending Cleveland's three-game winning streak despite the absence of Chris Bosh.

James didn't disappoint against his former team, however, scoring 30 points and adding eight assists. Kyrie Irving had a strong evening as well, going for 25 points, while Kevin Love scored 14 points and pulled down five rebounds.

Jonathan Bernier wasn’t quite satisfied after earning his second shutout of the season and posting his second-highest save total.

“Most of the night I felt pretty good, but there’s just a few that got away from me,” the Toronto goalie said after making 43 saves as the Maple Leafs beat the Dallas Stars 4-0 on Tuesday.

James van Riemsdyk had a goal and two assists for Toronto, which snapped a three-game slide.

The Stars’ four-game winning streak ended when they were shut out for the first time since Jan. 9 at New Jersey.

“I had a few bad rebounds but the D-men did a good job tying up sticks and letting me get back in position,” Bernier said. “Timely goal, good power play, good penalty kill. That’s how we won the game tonight.”
