A-List Ryan Gosling and Denis Villeneuve Lead List of Canada’s Oscar Nominees

Canadian Oscar nominees Denis Villeneuve and Ryan Gosling pulled away from their jam-packed schedules Tuesday morning to marvel over their Academy Award kudos.

They chatted by phone soon after Villeneuve learned he’d snagged his first directing nomination for the aliens-have-landed thriller Arrival, and Gosling picked up a best acting nod, one of a leading 14 nominations for La La Land.

“We are both proud of each other and happy for each other. It’s quite a nice ride for both of us and I’m very, very happy for what he did,” Villeneuve said from Los Angeles.

“Ryan is a kind of comical genius. He has that sense. He’s a very, very strong actor and I’m very proud of what he did in La La Land.”

Arrival is also up for best picture and six other awards, with several Canadian nominees in categories including production design and sound.

Film academy president responds to #Oscarsowhite diversity firestorm

Responding for the first time to the firestorm of criticism over the lack of diversity in this year's Oscar nominations, film academy president Cheryl Boone Isaacs says the all-white acting slate inspires her to accelerate the academy's push to be more inclusive. She also hopes the film industry as a whole will continue to strive for greater diversity.

The first black president of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences spoke out Friday night in an exclusive interview with The Associated Press about the Oscar nominations and the widespread criticism that followed.

All 20 of this year's acting contenders are white and there are no women in the directing or writing categories. After the nominations were announced Thursday morning, the hashtag #OscarsSoWhite started trending on Twitter.

Denis Villeneuve's Enemy is Toronto Movies Critics top Canadian pick

The 2014 Toronto Film Critics Association Awards were presented at a gala dinner on Tuesday, where Richard Linklater's Boyhood was awarded three top prizes and Denis Villeneuve's doppelganger thriller Enemy won the honour of best Canadian film of the year. 

The nominees for the best Canadian film award, which carries a $100,000 cash prize, were down to three features — Villeneuve's Enemy, Michael Dowse's The F Word and Xavier Dolan's Mommy. 

This is the third time Villeneuve has won the award, having previously taken it for 2009’s Polytechnique and 2010’s Incendies. 

“All three Canadian finalists are Montreal directors, but their films could not be more different,” said TFCA president Brian Johnson. “With Enemy, Denis Villeneuve ventured onto David Cronenberg’s home turf and took no prisoners. By embracing this nervy psychodrama, our critics held it up to the light.”

Top 20 top pirated movies of 2014

The Wolf of Wall Street, Martin Scorsese's dark comedy about a stock market swindler, tops a list of the most pirated movies of 2014. The movie, starring Leonardo DiCaprio, was illegally downloaded about 30 million times by torrent users this year, according to piracy tracking company Excipio and quoted in Variety.

Disney's smash hit, Frozen, came in a close second with 29.919 million downloads — despite worldwide sales that exceed $1.2 billion dollars US, according industry website Box Office Mojo.

Egypt And Morocco Ban 'Exodus: Gods And Kings'

Egypt has banned Hollywood's big screen biblical epic "Exodus: Gods and Kings," a 20th Century Fox spokesman said on Friday.

The studio owned by Twenty-First Century Fox Inc declined to give a reason for the ban, but films that depict biblical figures have been prohibited before in the Muslim country.

Paramount Pictures' Bible tale "Noah" was banned in several countries in the Middle East this year for its depiction of a prophet, which is forbidden in Islam.

Finally, Sony announces limited release of ‘The Interview’

Sony Pictures Entertainment announced Tuesday a limited theatrical release of “The Interview” beginning Thursday, putting back into the theatres the comedy that prompted an international incident with North Korea and outrage over its cancelled release.

Sony Entertainment CEO Michael Lynton said that Seth Rogen’s North Korea farce “will be in a number of theatres on Christmas Day.” He said Sony also is continuing its efforts to release the film on more platforms and in more theatres.

“We have never given up on releasing ‘The Interview,”’ Lynton said in a statement Tuesday. “While we hope this is only the first step of the film’s release, we are proud to make it available to the public and to have stood up to those who attempted to suppress free speech.”

Hobbit Weekend Top Box Office

Exodus: Gods And Kings plummeted an ominous 66.6% from its opening weekend haul last weekend. Elsewhere, The Hobbit: The Battle Of The Five Armies opened number one to a solid-sounding $90.6 million. This compared to $84.6 million for Unexpected Journey and $73.6 for Desolation Of Smaug. Of course, Five Armies opened on a Wednesday and the previous two opened on a Friday, and if you only only count the weekend, Five Armies opened to $56.2 million

Leaked Sony E-mail Suggests James Bond Could Have Been Idris Elba

In case you have not heard, Sony Pictures, one of the largest entertainment companies in America, suffered an unfortunate incident. All their private information was made public. From salaries they paid actors to who they find untalented like Angelina Jolie.

According to a new e-mail that was leaked gotten by The Daily Beast, Idris Elba who has portrayed Nelson Mandela on the big screen, is the next choice for the role.

The leaked e-mail from Amy Pascal, the Chairman of Sony Pictures Entertainment’s Motion Pictures Group, states “Idris should be next James Bond”.

Daniel Craig who is the current Bond has publicly stated that he is ready to stop playing the iconic character. When asked by a fan in September, Idris said he would love to play the role if it was offered to him.

Sony Shoves 'The Interview' After Hack

Sources tell CNN that U.S. investigators have determined that the hackers that perpetrated the Sony hack were indeed working for North Korea.

It looks like Sony will not be putting out The Interview at all. After most major movie theater chains pulled the film from their schedules following the threats of terrorism made by hackers, Sony has decided to shelve the Seth Rogen and James Franco comedy entirely.

In a statement, the studio said:

"In light of the decision by the majority of our exhibitors not to show the film The Interview, we have decided not to move forward with the planned December 25 theatrical release. We respect and understand our partners' decision and, of course, completely share their paramount interest in the safety of employees and theater-goers."

Market Penetration As Redbox Resurrects DVD Rentals to Canadians

A lot of giant red boxes have been popping up lately in grocery stores, gas stations and convenience stores across Canada. They’ve arrived at Tim Hortons and Shoppers Drug Mart too.

They’re the new face of DVD rentals, a business that continues to hang on even after the big box video stores faded to black.

Since 2012, the Redbox DVD rental business that has enjoyed huge success in the U.S., has been making inroads north of the border, particularly in major urban centres. The bright red kiosks are being installed at the exits of well-known shopping and snacking spots, filling the void left behind by the demise of DVD rental chains like Blockbuster and Rogers, says Ron Cihocki, country manager for Redbox in Canada.

‘X-Men: Apocalypse’ Marks The End Of The Marvel Sequel

Turns out that X-Men: Apocalypse isn’t just about the evil mutant with a cool name, it’s also the end of the X-Men as we know them on the screen. We talked about Cyclops and Jean Grey would be recast for future movies, but it turns out that Days of Future Past really did clean the slate of the past X-Men movies, with Apocalypse coming in to finish the job.
