How Canada’s Image is Being Redefined by Rob Ford and Justin Bieber

As disruptive events help shape countries into what they stand for today, I believe Canada is going through its own brand revolution, or maybe evolution. With our recent success at the Sochi Olympics, Justin Bieber’s highly visible troubles with the law, and our very colourful Toronto mayor all making international headlines, I am noticing the perception of Canada is shifting from staid, conservative and somewhat low-key to one that better reflects the colour of our flag – namely energetic, flamboyant, and loud.

Historically, Canada has had a reputation for being restrained. Even our successful, high profile Canadian superstars who prospered in Europe and America helped maintain this perception of our country. During my many travels, any mention of Canada would bring references to Quebec, our winters and hockey.

With a manhunt underway for the deposed Ukrainian president, Viktor F. Yanukovych, who was charged on Monday with mass murder, officials in Parliament pushed ahead with the monumental task of rebuilding the collapsed government. The country’s most pressing problem, however, is largely out of their control: a fast-approaching economic disaster that they cannot solve without international assistance.

The new speaker, Oleksandr V. Turchynov, admitted as much, warning in an open letter to the Ukrainian people on Sunday that “Ukraine is now in a pre-default condition and sliding into the abyss.”

Zimbabwe's longest serving president, Robert Mugabe turned 90 today and in his address to his party faithfuls, said he's not ready to vacate the president's seat yet  "When the day comes and I retire, yes, sure, the day will come, but I do not want to leave my party in tatters. I want to leave it intact".

Mugabe has said that he would leave when he is 94years old, that would be in 2018, after completing his current tenure which he was elected for last year.
