Japan 'Made in China' Labels Dropped To Boost Sales

Chinese manufacturers have stopped using "made in China" labels on clothes sold in Japan in an effort to improve sales, it's reported.

The move is an attempt to overcome perceptions that Chinese-made clothes are poor quality, the South China Morning Post website reports. Instead, clothes are being labelled "made in PRC" - the People's Republic of China - because many Japanese customers don't know what the acronym stands for, the website says. Japan's Consumer Affairs Agency says despite the term being lost in translation, there's nothing to stop Chinese companies from changing their labels.

University of British Columbia student designs robot that solves Rubik’s cube

Thandi Fletcher Metro Solving a Rubik’s cube is no easy feat— except for a robot named Josh.

Recent University of B.C. graduate Kristopher De Asis has designed and built a robot that can solve the famous six-sided puzzle in potentially record-setting time.

Dubbed Josh, the ‘bot can solve a 2×2 Rubik’s cube, which has two layers, in about 15 seconds and a standard Rubik’s cube, which has three layers, in about 35 seconds.

“I believe it’s the fastest one-armed robot,” De Asis told Metro. “The quicker ones use two or four arms.”

French inventor creates pill that will make your fart smell like chocolate

A 65yr old French inventor Christian Poincheval (pictured above) has created a sweet smelling pill that makes farts smell like chocolate.

The chocolate pill is a new addition to his other products which include pills that make farts smell like roses or violets and fart-reducing powder for pets.

According to him, necessity was the mother of this invention. He said he was was eating dinner with friends in 2006 when he realised the group had caused a gas attack at the restaurant.

When Torontonian Jordan Axani, 28, posted on Reddit last week that he was looking for an Elizabeth Gallagher to take his ex-girlfriend’s place on a ‘round the world adventure’, social media buzzed with people hoping to nab the trip.

The news gave another Toronto Jordan an idea that he hopes will shake up the travel industry. Jordan Bishop, the 23-year-old founder of Yore Oyster — a site that helps travelers find cheap flights — said Axani inspired him to create a new site feature called Connections.

Connections allows users to post spare plane tickets with the name of the person the ticket is registered to in hopes of finding a traveler with the same name to take it for free. Users can also sign up to be notified about tickets available in their name.

From Berlin, Bishop told Torstar News Service that Connections lets travelers skirt airline rules preventing name changes on non-transferable tickets.

Ebola Outbreak: Deployment of robot-like decontamination equipment to aid fight

A U.K.-based company is getting a lot of attention for its role in the fight against Ebola.
Shares of Bioquell jumped earlier this month as the company continues to deploy robot-like decontamination systems in western hospitals with suspected or confirmed Ebola cases.

Bioquell makes portable, remote-controlled systems that can decontaminate hospital rooms with a 35-per-cent hydrogen peroxide solution, which is released as a vapour. The company says the vapour enters “every nook and cranny” in a room to remove pathogens. It can also be used on electronic devices.

he technology is not new; it has been used before in the battle against hospital “superbugs,” such as MRSA, or methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus.

But Ebola fears have now put Bioquell and its equipment in the spotlight.

It’s a car! It’s a bike! No … it’s a plug-free electric hybrid prototype!

OK, so they need to work on the name, but it’s a smart concept: a team of PhD candidates from the University of Toronto has created an electric pedal-powered car-bike that could help beat the traffic snarls that plague our city’s streets.

“The project was inspired by my experiences commuting from Union Station,” co-creator Phil Lam says with a laugh. “But everybody’s experience is bad, right? Drivers get stuck in traffic. People who take public transit never get anywhere on time. Walking is pleasant, but it doesn’t take you very far … Cycling, if not outright dangerous, is certainly uncomfortable for a lot of reasons. Everybody’s suffering in their own way. The answer is reinterpreting how we get around.”

Fitted with wires, bike parts and a few Tupperware containers, the prototype looks like a cross between a recumbent bicycle and a homemade sci-fi space pod. Within the lightweight aluminum chassis, however, are the seeds of a vision for healthier, happier, and more sustainable urban transport in increasingly dense cities.

You charge the vehicle’s battery by pedalling. The intensity of pedalling controls its 500-watt engine’s throttle. The engine itself is fully programmable, which means that you can easily adjust the pedal-to-engine-power ratio. Rushing to an important meeting? Let the engine do most of the work, so you don’t show up sweaty. In need of a little exercise? Pedal the roughly 45-kilogram vehicle until you feel the burn.

STI's are transmitted through unprotected sex, genital secretions, skin-on-skin contact or contact with open sores.

Alicia Keys hosts “Coming to America” themed 35th Birthday Party for husband

Music producer Swizz Beatz celebrated his 35th with a party in New York yesterday. While Swizz’ actual birthday is tomorrow (13th Sept), his wife Alicia Keys hosted an amazing “Coming to America” themed party for him last night.

 

The party was brimming with celebs including Lala and Carmelo Anthony, DMX and guess who? Swizz Beatz’ ex-wife Mashonda!

 

It was been a great year for Swizz with various corporate creative collaborations and his enrolment in the Harvard Business School’s nine-week Owner/President Management Extension Program. He and his wife Alicia Keys are also expecting their second child together.

UK Graduate Who Held Sign Advertising Himself at Train Station Lands Dream Job

 

The 22 year old Nigerian graduate, Alfred Ajani, who held up sign advertising himself at Waterloo Station  has landed his dream job after an executive who saw at the station invited him for an interview.

Alfred Ajani (pictured centre) started work yesterday September 8th for recruitment firm, the Asoria Group, London. Alfred, who works as a marketing executive said;

"The director walked past me when he saw me that morning, but later got in contact through the website Linked In. The company said they were looking for someone with out of the box ideas and so they were keen to get me in.

The job is one I wouldn't have got if I hadn't gone to the station that morning, so I advise anyone out there who is in the same position I was to think of more direct ways to speak to employers.'

His new colleagues printed T-shirts to welcome him on his first day yesterday. How nice!

The groom married his heartthrob wearing a Man U jersey and decorated his wedding car with the club’s emblem. US Students Developing Nail Polish That Detects Dating Rape Drugs

Four students at North Carolina State University say they’ve developed nail polish that can help women detect a date rape drug in their cocktails.

The polish is still a work in progress, but the science and engineering students are already marketing their enterprise, Undercover Colors, as “the first fashion company empowering women to prevent sexual assault.”

The nail polish changes colour when it comes into contact with commonly used date-rape drugs, including Xanax, GHB and Rohypnol. If a woman at a party or a bar suspects that her drink has been spiked, all she has to do is dip her finger in the cup.

Undercover Colors’ website and social media pages don’t explain in detail how the nail polish works. The four male students behind the project, Ankesh Madan, Stephen Gray, Tasso Von Windheim and Tyler Confrey-Maloney, are currently seeking donations to refine their prototype.

The students have already won an entrepreneurship competition sponsored by their university and secured $100,000 from an investor interested in their product.

In an interview earlier this summer, Madan said he and his colleagues came up with the idea for the nail polish after thinking about how to address “big problems in our society” and discussing date rape drugs.
