Israel Mablick opens the door of his refrigerator and takes stock of its meagre offerings.

“This is all we have for food,” he says, gesturing to the mostly empty shelves.

There is a small pot of leftover seal meat on the second shelf, next to a tub of margarine and a couple of slices of bread. There’s juice, a bag of milk, some water and a carton of eggs, plus condiments and a small bag of shredded cheese.

In his freezer, there are a few bags of frozen vegetables next to a carton of Chapman’s ice cream. Two cereal boxes — Corn Pops and Corn Flakes — are the only items in one of his cupboards.

“That’s all we have,” Mablick says, “and there’s six kids.”

The 36-year-old Inuit man shares a small, two-bedroom Iqaluit apartment with his wife and their five kids, his mother, his sister and his young nephew. His is the face of hunger in Nunavut, the bare cupboards and empty fridge emblematic of a long-standing problem that even today’s government programs don’t address.

The federal government’s $60-million food subsidy, Nutrition North, is only the latest of the proposed solutions that has stumbled under mismanagement and the enormity of the hunger problem.

Woman screams her innocence before being beheaded in Saudi Arabia for murdering 6yr-old step-daughter

A woman beheaded in a Saudi street for killing her husband's 6yr old daughter screams her innocence in graphic footage of the execution uploaded to the Internet. An executioner in Mecca, the holy city, took two swings to hack off Layla bint Abdul Mutaleb Bassim's head, after she was found guilty of beating the girl and raping her with a broomstick.

The incident has sparked outrage in the country, but not because of the brutal punishment meted out. Rather Saudis are up in arms that the execution was filmed and posted online, where the woman's family might see it.

Now Saudi authorities have arrested someone for filming the execution, local media reports. But it was not clear what crime he has been arrested for.

Not satisfied, she reportedly made plans to meet up with the students a second time at the same spot, bringing along another teacher, 30-year-old Michelle Ghirelli.

The two met up with several of the same group, spending a night on the beach during which they had s*x with two students.

Police released the pair on bail on Sunday, according to American news reports, and are due to appear in court on Wednesday.

How Come! RBC Customer's Bank Accounts Wiped Out 3 Times By Fraud

RBC ROYAL BANK CANADA
RBC downtown Toronto. CP
Meghann Johnston has seen her RBC bank accounts looted three times by someone who stole her identity. The fraudsters walked away with tens of thousands of dollars.
Johnston calls it "an incredibly stressful" situation.
Each time, a fraudster walked into an RBC branch during business hours pretending to be Johnston, presented fake ID and was allowed to withdraw money from Johnston's account.
The first time it happened in Toronto in 2012, Johnston was a law student. She was home studying when the call came from RBC telling her she had to get to her branch right away.
"I found out that somebody had gone into a branch and was impersonating me and had withdrawn quite a large sum of money from my student line of credit," she told Go Public.
Johnston said the fraudster took $26,000. The bank gave her the money back and launched an investigation. Johnston had to go through the process of changing all her accounts and her automatic payments and had to pay the associated fees.

Canadian couple in limbo demand audit of spousal sponsorship program

Torstar News Service
Canadians caught up in Ottawa’s backlog in processing in-country spousal sponsorships are calling for an audit of the troubled program.

Processing times have tripled recently. Thousands of Canadians are now having to wait more than two years to acquire permanent resident status for their foreign spouses already living in Canada. That means living in limbo for the foreign partner, including not being allowed to take a job or access health care coverage.

A national online group called Canada Inland Spousal Sponsorship Petitioners says Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) must immediately establish “service delivery standards,” as recommended by the Office of the Auditor General in a scathing report in 2010.

“As a Canadian who has lived, worked and paid taxes here for 25 years, I just feel like a second-rate citizen,” said Malcolm White of Oshawa, who married wife Anne in 2011. The Birmingham, England, resident joined him here two years later and filed an application for permanent resident status in December 2013.

This must stop! BokoHaram Kills Woman In Labour

PMNews
Boko Haram fighters have killed a woman as she was in labour during what is feared could be the deadliest attack in the militants’ six-year insurgency, Amnesty International claimed on Thursday.

The human rights group said one witness to the assault on Baga, on the shores of Lake Chad in northeast Nigeria, told them the woman was shot by indiscriminate fire that also cut down small children.

“Half of the baby boy (was) out and she died like this,” the unnamed witness was quoted as saying.
Amnesty said this week that hundreds of people, if not more, may have been killed in the attack, which began on January 3 and is thought to have targeted civilian vigilantes helping the military.

Dozens Killed As Floods Hit Malawi

At least 48 people have been killed and around 23,000 forced from their homes by heavy flooding in Malawi yesterday.

President Peter Mutharika has declared a third of the country a disaster zone and urgently appealed for foreign aid.

Reports from neighbouring Mozambique said a group of 25 school children were swept away by floodwater on Monday after heavy regional rain began last month. Sadly, forecasters say they expect it to continue over the coming days.

Mr Mutharika, the President has announced his government alone does not have the capacity to control the flood.

More than 3,700 homes destroyed in Nigeria by BokoHaram attack

Amnesty International has released satellite images from the January 2nd and 7th Boko Haram attack in Baga Borno state. Early reports put the death toll from the attack at 2000 but that has been disputed by the Nigerian military who put the death toll at 150.

According to a report carried out by AI's Nigeria researcher, Daniel Eyre, about 3,700 homes in two villages, Baga and Doron Baga were destroyed by the militants. The report claims that of all the Boko Haram attacks, the one carried out in Baga last week is so far the deadliest.

U.S. consumers increased their borrowing in November, as stronger demand for auto and student loans offset a drop in credit card debt.

The Federal Reserve said Thursday that consumer borrowing rose by $14.1 billion following a $16 billion increase in October. The gains have pushed consumer debt excluding real estate loans to a record level of $3.3 trillion.

The latest figures suggest that an improving economy and strong employment gains over the past year may be making consumers more comfortable with ramping up their borrowing

Canadian Natural Resources Ltd. is pausing one oilsands project while pressing ahead with another as the major oil and gas producer becomes the latest to slash its 2015 spending in the face of deteriorating oil prices.

The Calgary-based oil and gas giant (TSX:CNQ) built flexibility into the $8.6-billion budget it announced in November. Oil prices have fallen dramatically since then, so this year's spending now is expected to come in at $6.2 billion.

The company also expects to continue to grow output compared with 2014 but at a slower pace -- seven per cent, rather than the original target of 11 per cent.

North American benchmark crude has been trading below US$50 a barrel, less than half of where it was just six months ago.

Excuseme! Ecuadorian beauty queen dies during liposuction surgery procedure

A 19yr old Ecuadorian beauty queen and medical student named Catherine Cando (pictured above) died on Saturday January 10th during a botched liposuction operation she got as a prize after she won a local beauty contest.

According to local media reports, Catherine won money and the cosmetic surgery procedure after beating 23 other girls to win Ecuador's Queen of Durán beauty contest in 2014. Her brother said Catherine initially rejected the surgery because she was young and figured she could lose the weight by working out but when a surgeon pressured her, she caved in.
