University of Dalhousie student suspended for Facebook posts he hadn't seen

Alison Auld, The Canadian Press
A dentistry student who was part of a Facebook page that contained sexually violent content about female classmates was suspended largely because he clicked the "Like" button on one suggestive photograph, his lawyers said Wednesday.

Sarah MacIntosh said she was surprised to learn that her client, Ryan Millet, was penalized for that single action and his membership in a now notorious Facebook group linked to Dalhousie University's fourth-year dentistry class.

MacIntosh told a news conference that Dalhousie University concluded Millet was guilty of "blatant unprofessionalism" and, as a result, suspended his clinic privileges earlier this month based on six specific posts made in the Facebook group.

Sarah Palin Facebook Photos Of Son Stepping On Dog Trigger Online Outrage

Reuters
Facebook photos posted by Sarah Palin showing her son Trig using the family dog as a step stool unleashed online fury on Friday reminiscent of the public reaction to the disclosure that Mitt Romney had once driven with his dog strapped on the car's roof.

Trig, 6, who has Down Syndrome, is shown stepping on the back of the family's black Labrador while it lies on the kitchen floor in order to reach the sink. The dog appears unruffled.

The Facebook post by Palin, who was the Republican vice presidential nominee in 2008, drew more than 12,000 comments by midday Friday, ranging from cries of animal abuse to those seconding Palin's praise for the youngest of her five children.

"May 2015 see every stumbling block turned into a stepping stone on the path forward," Palin wrote on her Facebook page.

"Trig just reminded me. He, determined to help wash dishes with an oblivious mama not acknowledging his signs for 'up!', found me and a lazy dog blocking his way. He made his stepping stone," Palin wrote.

Woman Raped And Stabbed Repeatedly By Man She Met On Facebook Reveals His Identity Before Dying!

A Romanian woman who was left for dead after being raped and stabbed in the neck with a screwdriver managed to tell police the identity of her alleged attacker before slipping into a coma.

Eliza Dragne, 30, met 29-year-old Nicu Alin Cristea on Facebook, where he claimed to be a humanitarian worker helping orphaned children.

In fact he was a newly married construction worker who persuaded Miss Dragne to go on a date with him and arranged to pick her up in his car.

Miss Dragne had kept the new relationship secret from friends and family, who had no idea where she was going.

Cristea arrived as planned, but instead of driving to the bar the pair had picked for the date, he took her to a remote spot near Alexandria, southern Romanian, before attacking her, it is claimed.

Miss Dragne agreed to meet him and he picked her up in his car, but instead of driving to a bar, he went into the countryside where he attacked her.

How social media can mess up your mental state

It is important to always remember that what you see online is a mere snapshot of someone else’s life. | Istock
Bee Quammie | MetroJessica Johnson, 29, had a love-hate relationship with social media — she loved connecting with people but often ended up feeling bad about her own life.

“Selfies are fun until you start over analyzing your looks,” she says.

“Facebook is fun until you see amazing things happening for friends that aren’t happening for you. It’s easy to measure yourself based on Instagram likes and Twitter followers, too.

“When you really think about it, it doesn’t make sense. But in the moment, it really affects you.”

Johnson is among roughly 73 per cent of adults online who use a social-networking site of some kind, according to Pew Research Centre’s 2013 Social Media Update Project.
