Nova Scotia | Maritime storm could dump 40cm of snow in some areas

Nova Scotia's famous groundhog prognosticator Shubenacadie Sam is waiting to make his annual prediction Monday morning, but there's no shadow of a doubt that the Maritimes will be hit with another major storm.

CBC meteorologist Peter Coade said this storm is expected to be Nova Scotia's worst of the season so far.

"It will be moving into the Maritimes early Monday afternoon in southwestern Nova Scotia and southeast New Brunswick. Then, it will spread throughout the entire area by the evening hours," he said.

Western Nova Scotia will be hardest hit, Coade said, with between 20 and 30 centimetres of snow. The storm could track inland over Nova Scotia, which will temper snowfalls slightly.

A Nova Scotia newspaper has defied a judge’s publication ban over a “prominent child pornography case” by publishing the victim’s name – Rehtaeh Parsons.

The Chronicle Herald published a story Monday about a second man who entered a guilty plea to one count of child pornography in the high-profile case.

“We’ve decided to publish the name of the victim in this story, despite a court-ordered ban,” an editor's note explains. “We believe its in the public interest in this unique case, given the widespread recognition of Rehtaeh Parsons’ name, and given the good that can come, and has already come, from free public debate over sexual consent and the other elements of her story.”

Parsons’ father Glen Canning praised the publication’s decision to publicize his daughter’s name.

American press noticed the ban across Canadian media. Parsons’ mother Leah told BuzzFeed it was as if her daughter is “being silenced for the second time.” Slate also pointed out the muzzle, saying “Rehtaeh Parsons was the most famous victim in Canada. Now, journalists can’t even say her name.”

Nova Scotia has been chosen for a second test of Canada’s response to Ebola.

On Sunday, a team from the federal Public Health Agency arrived to brief health-care providers on the techniques they will be reportedly practising on Monday should a confirmed case of Ebola arrive in Canada.

“Drills, dry runs, and practising are important to ensuring that our teams are able to respond without hesitation in the event of a case of Ebola,” Health Minister Rona Ambrose said in a news release.

The agency says if a case of Ebola is ever confirmed in Canada, one of the five Ebola rapid response teams would work with local health authorities to prevent its spread.

Each team comprises a field epidemiologist, an infection control expert, a bio-safety expert, a laboratory expert, a communications expert and a logistics expert. Aircraft are stationed in Winnipeg and Ottawa.

The Nova Scotia government introduced legislation today that would place an indefinite moratorium on high-volume hydraulic fracturing for onshore oil and gas from shale deposits.

But the legislation would provide an exemption for fracking used for testing and research purposes.

Energy Minister Andrew Younger says the amendments to the Petroleum Resources Act will not provide a loophole for the shale gas industry.

Nova Scotia Teen Banned From Social Media Sites for Almost 2yrs

A provincial-court judge in Nova Scotia has banned a teen from using social-media websites after he pleaded guilty to multiple charges, including assault, uttering threats and criminal harassment.

The Sydney teen was also sentenced Thursday to six months of house arrest followed by 15 months of probation after pleading guilty to sexual assault, mischief and assault with a weapon for offences between September and April involving two victims.

He was 17 at the time of the offences and cannot be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.
As part of his sentence, Judge Jean Whalen ordered the teen to delete any Facebook, Instagram and Twitter accounts for 21 months.

He is also prohibited from accessing the sites under an alias, and must submit his passwords to a sentencing supervisor.

Crown attorney Steve Drake says it is the first time in the province that such an order has been issued and sets a precedent.
