Barack & Michelle Obama’s Forthcoming Memoirs land Record-Breaking $65m Publishing Deal

Penguin Random House has landed a deal to publish two forthcoming memoirs by former U.S. President Barack Obama and his wife, Michelle, with one volume to be written by each, the publishing company said on Tuesday.

Terms of the agreement, in which Penguin Random House acquired worldwide publication rights for the two books, were not disclosed, but Financial Times said the Obamas may have set a record deal in excess of $65million.

But in keeping with their past practice, the Obamas plan to donate a “significant portion of their author proceeds to charity,” including the Obama Foundation, the publisher said in a statement.

The deal followed a heated auction for global rights to the two books with bidding that reached more than $60 million, a record sum for U.S. presidential memoirs, the Financial Times reported, citing people with knowledge of the sales process.

Beijing Is Now The Billionaire Capital Of The World

Beijing is the new "Billionaire Capital of the World.'' The Chinese capital has overtaken the New York as home to the most billionaires -- 100 to 95 -- according to Hurun, a Shanghai firm that publishes a monthly magazine and releases yearly rankings and research about the world's richest people and their spending habits.

The study, which comes months after reports suggested China now has more billionaires than the United States, highlights how China's elite are continuing to accrue vast wealth despite a wobbling stock market and cooling economy.

Different tabulations of wealth, such as the Hurun Report and the Forbes list, have historically produced somewhat different results depending on their methodology.

Rupert Hoogewerf, the founder of Hurun, attributed China's explosive wealth creation to Chinese market regulators allowing a flood of new initial public offerings after holding back new IPOs for several years.

Hoogewerf said his wealth calculations were made using stock prices as of Jan. 15, which means they took into account the Chinese market's 40 per cent tumble over the past half year.

Sorry, Dr. Dre, you’re not a billionaire.

In fact, no recording artists are billionaires, according to research firm Wealth-X’s list of the world’s richest musicians.

The iconic rapper and entrepreneur sold his headphone business, Beats Electronics, to Apple earlier this and declared himself hip-hop’s first billionaire.

But Wealth-X estimates Dre’s net worth at $650 million U.S., good enough to make him the world’s third-richest recording artist.

The top spot belongs to Madonna, with a net worth of $800 million.

And one Canadian made it onto the list: Celine Dion, whose $630-million fortune was good enough to rank her the fifth richest musician in the world. She's the only non-American or non-British person on the list.

British Columbia | Slot Machine Malfunctions And Paid Woman 100 Times Max

B.C. Lottery Corp. quietly repaired dozens of slot machines around the province earlier this year after a malfunctioning machine in Penticton resulted in a $100,000 jackpot, 100 times the maximum allowed on that particular machine.

A woman hit the jackpot on a "Dragon Fever" slot machine in Penticton's Lake City Casino on Jan. 20, said BCLC spokesperson Laura Piva-Babcock.

The progressive slot machine was supposed to max out at $1,000 jackpots, but lottery officials were concerned when the machine displayed a $99,999.97 prize.

"As per standard procedure, the machine was immediately placed out of service while the matter was investigated and we notified our regulator as well as the manufacturer of the machine," she said.

The lottery corporation chose to pay the woman her displayed winnings and recover the money from Konami, the gambling company that built the slot machine.

Machines repaired

Piva-Babcock said three days after the incident, BCLC also pulled 189 similar government slot machines out of service at B.C. casinos until they could be examined.

The Associated Press
Washington state’s first marijuana auction brought in about $600,000.

Fireweed Farms of Prosser sold about 300 pounds of pot to state-licensed processors and retailers Saturday, the Tri-City Herald reported (http://is.gd/JsJp6T ). Bidding took place under a black tent fronted by tall heaters, and the event was monitored by at least two representatives of the Washington Liquor Control Board. Bidders could smell plastic bags of buds before offering a bid.

The marijuana was planted in May and harvested between late September and mid-October. Fireweed Farms owner Randy Williams had sold some of his marijuana to recreational processors earlier this year, but the auction represented the bulk of his harvest.

He said he held the auction to “get rid of it all quick” so he could spend time with his grandson instead of packaging marijuana. The harvested and dried marijuana was priced by the gram and auctioned by the strain in lots ranging from about half a pound to five pounds.
