Wabush lifts state of emergency

An aerial shot of some of the destruction caused by the forest fires that burned outside Wabush for three weeks.
A state of emergency was formally lifted Monday for the western Labrador town of Wabush, which was plagued by forest fires and ensuing smoke for more than two weeks.
An evacuation alert for Wabush was lifted over the weekend.
Mayor Ron Barron said he was relieved to see the state of emergency lifted as well.
Barron said much of the fire area outside the mining town has been contained, although there are still hot spots in the De Mille Lake area.
Fires in the area broke out on June 23, and five days later forced a 48-hour evacuation of Wabush because of deteriorating air quality.
The fires have burned more than 270 square kilometres of land in the area.
"We have come through the biggest forest fire in the history of Labrador West stronger and more dedicated to our community," Barron said in a statement.
Meanwhile, another fire in central Labrador continued to burn through the weekend. Traffic was being escorted along part of the highway between Churchill Falls and Happy Valley-Goose Bay.
Last week, officials redirected two of the water bombers that had been assigned to the Wabush-area fires to the Gull Island area on the edge of the Churchill River. CBC

Loblaw to buy Shoppers Drug Mart for $12.4B

The merger of Canada's largest grocery retailer, Loblaw, and the country's biggest pharmacy chain, Shoppers Drug Mart, will not reduce competition and customer choice as some fear, Loblaw executive chairman Galen G. Weston assured customers at a press conference in Brampton, Ont., Monday.
"This is a transaction about two complementary businesses," Weston said. "This is not an overlapping, scaling-up transaction when you really get into the detail."
In a deal that the two companies say will change the retail landscape in Canada, Loblaw has agreed to buy Shoppers Drug Mart for $12.4 billion.
Toronto-based Loblaw will acquire all outstanding common shares in Shoppers, gaining some 1,200 drug stores in all provinces — many of them small locations in urban markets — in return for cash and Loblaw shares.
The Weston family has agreed to subscribe for additional Loblaw shares but its ownership will be diluted from a stake of about 63 per cent now to 46 per cent after the deal is completed.
Loblaw shares were up more than eight per cent on news of the deal and were trading at $51.54 midday Monday on the Toronto Stock Exchange. Shoppers shares were up almost 27 per cent and trading at $61.33.

Obama releases statement following Zimmerman not guilty verdict

The US president said:
“The death of Trayvon Martin was a tragedy. Not just for his family, or for any one community, but for America. I know this case has elicited strong passions. And in the wake of the verdict, I know those passions may be running even higher. But we are a nation of laws, and a jury has spoken. I now ask every American to respect the call for calm reflection from two parents who lost their young son. And as we do, we should ask ourselves if we’re doing all we can to widen the circle of compassion and understanding in our own communities. We should ask ourselves if we’re doing all we can to stem the tide of gun violence that claims too many lives across this country on a daily basis. We should ask ourselves, as individuals and as a society, how we can prevent future tragedies like this. As citizens, that’s a job for all of us. That’s the way to honor Trayvon Martin.”

The fateful night
The deadly encounter took place on February 26, 2012, as Martin walked back to his father's fiancee's house through the rain from a Sanford convenience store. The 17-year-old was carrying Skittles and a drink.
Zimmerman, a neighborhood watch volunteer, spotted him and called police.

A 911 dispatcher told Zimmerman that officers were on the way and not to follow the allegedly suspicious person. But Zimmerman still got out of his car, later telling police he just wanted to get a definitive address to relay to authorities.

Sometime after that, Zimmerman and Martin got into a physical altercation. Questions later arose about who was the aggressor, about whether Martin may have seen or reached for Zimmerman's gun, and about whether Zimmerman should have had more injuries if he was pummeled, as he claims.

Prosecutors never accused Zimmerman, who identifies himself as Hispanic, of being racist. But they did argue that he wrongly and spitefully prejudged Martin as one of those "f***ing punks," as he's heard saying under his breath in his call to police.
"The defendant didn't shoot Trayvon Martin because he had to," Assistant State Attorney John Guy said. "He shot him because he wanted to. That's the bottom line."
The defense contended that Martin jumped out of some bushes and pounced on Zimmerman as he was walking back toward his car that night, then punched him and slammed his head repeatedly into the concrete sidewalk.

Zimmerman's account of what happened the night of the shooting was a central part of the trial. He was the only living person who witnessed the entire incident, and there wasn't much physical evidence for either team to fall back on. CNN

'Glee' star Cory Monteith found dead in hotel in Vancouver, Canada

Cory Monteith, who played heart throb Finn Hudson in the Fox hit "Glee," was found dead in a Vancouver hotel room on Saturday, police said. He was 31.

Police said the cause of death was not immediately apparent, but they ruled out foul play.
Medical examiners will conduct an autopsy on Monday.

Monteith's body was discovered by staff members at the Fairmont Pacific Rim Hotel after he missed his checkout time, acting Chief Constable Doug LePard told reporters.

Monteith apparently had several people over to his room at one point Friday night, but LePard said Monteith, who had checked in July 6, was seen on hotel surveillance video returning to his room in the early morning hours by himself.

If Canada's a Democracy, Why Are We Ruled By the Aristocracy?

A country's head of state is not just a hollow symbol of old history. The person represents the people of a country -- their values and common purpose, their sense of unity, their loyalty to each other and their national pride.

A survey of more than 2,000 Canadians conducted by Harris-Decima in February 2013 found that a majority of Canadians (55%) want to change to a democratically chosen Canadian head of state, while only 34% want to continue with a member of the British royal family.

This means more than 15 million adult Canadians (and likely their kids as well) want to retire the monarchy and change to a democratically chosen Canadian head of state.

A survey of more than 2,000 Canadians by Harris-Decima in May 2012 showed that 65% of adult Canadians want the Governor General and Lieutenant Governors to have clear powers and to be elected. As well, a survey of more than 2,000 Canadians by Harris-Decima in November-December 2013 showed that 84% of adult Canadians want enforceable rules to restrict key powers of the Prime Minister and provincial premiers.

Clearly Canadians want change.

Foods to help fight Diabetes

Sometimes we eat, sometimes we're eaten. Montrealer mauled by lion

A Montreal woman who was mauled by a lion at a South African wildlife refuge where she was volunteering believes she was put at risk when she was asked to work alone within reach of a lion's pen.
“They should not have put me in a feeding cage where a lion can stick out his arm completely and grab you,” Lauren Fagen, 18, told CBC’sDaybreak from a hospital bed in South Africa, where she is recovering from Monday's attack.
“It’s irrelevant what I was doing — he just shouldn’t be able to grab me like that.”
'If he wanted to kill me, I would for sure be dead. Or at least have lost both of my legs. I find it incredible that he didn’t kill me and I love Duma to death for not killing me.'—Linda Fagen, injured wildlife refuge volunteer
Fagen had been at the refuge for two weeks volunteering as part of a program for students.
Students pay around $69 a day to take part in the program, money which Fagen said goes toward their room and board. They’re trained on safety measures when they arrive and are supervised by staff members, according to the Moholoholo Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre.
On Monday, Fagen said she was asked to clean the feeding pen attached to the enclosure housing a five-year-old male lion named Duma.
Typically, the volunteers work in pairs, but Fagen said she was told to perform the task alone. In other enclosures, a steel door separates the feeding area from the area where the lions are held.
This one was different, Fagen said, and had bars like a jail cell, not a solid door.
“I found that kind of alarming, but kind of ignored it and I proceeded to clean his feeding cage by myself and Duma proceeded to rub himself against the gate facing the feeding cage as I cleaned,” she said.

Noting the animal's sharp claws, she said she moved further away from the lion even though she believed he was acting affectionately.
Fagen said the lion suddenly stuck its paw through the gate and caught one of her legs. It pulled her through the bars, trapping her knee, as it bit and scratched her.
“I screamed and it felt like it was a very long time, however I don’t know how long I was in the gate,” she said. “It felt like a minute to two minutes, but it was definitely shorter than that because for me it was in slow motion.”
Fagen was rushed to hospital where she is being treated for an injury to her knee as well as cuts and bites.
She doesn't believe the lion was trying to kill her, but doesn't know what triggered the attack.
"If he wanted to kill me, I would for sure be dead. Or at least have lost both of my legs. I find it incredible that he didn’t kill me and I love Duma to death for not killing me. He was so gentle for a while."
She insists that she was following staff instructions at the time of the attack, but Brian Jones, the founder of the centre, said it was Fagen who was being negligent.

Rules not followed

He said she did not listen to repeated warnings not to touch the animals and ignored signs posted around the reserve.
“This little girl, she confessed the first day, ‘I’ve come to hug a lion or a cheetah or a leopard. I want to hug them,’” Jones told CBC News.
“I said, ‘You cannot hug no animal. A week later, she’s trying to hug the leopards. She’s chasing the antelope around the yard. She’s trying to hug them. I thought, ‘Goodness me. She’s cuckoo.’”
Jones said other witnesses at the park reported that Fagen was too close to the enclosure and was warned by other students to move back when the lion grabbed her.
“It’s almost impossible for anything to happen unless you break the rules,” he said.
“She’s probably been watching too many TV programs where you see tame lions and people are hugging them. That is imprinted in their minds. She’s come from Canada not realizing she’s in wild Africa and trying to hug these animals.”

Animal interaction encouraged

Fagen admits being close to animals had been a dream of hers, but not one she would have compromised her own safety for. She says she was alone at the time of the attack and no one else saw what happened.
“As for hugging animals, I definitely wanted to, but I always respected the rules,” she said.
“I wasn’t going to throw myself in the cheetah cage. However, there were some animals there that, when a staff member was present, you could pet them and be affectionate with them within reason. You couldn’t go near their faces or anything like that, but I respected the rules.”
The website of the Moholoholo Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre says the responsibility of student volunteers is caring for animals, including feeding, cleaning and "providing stimulation for our more intelligent residents."
Jones said in 23 years there has never been an incident like this involving volunteers.
Fagen hasn’t decided if she’ll pursue further action against the refuge, but said she wanted to tell her side of the story before she considered her next step. (CBC)

Canadian Train Explosion Leaves Five Dead & Many More Still Missing!

Tanker cars of petroleum exploded in the Canadian province of Quebec after a train derailed, destroying nearby buildings and leaving five dead and forty unaccounted for. Andy Murray beats Novak Djokovic to win Wimbledon

Andy Murray won his first Wimbledon title and ended Britain's 77-year wait for a men's champion with a brilliant victory over world number one Novak Djokovic. The Scot, 26, converted his fourth championship point in a dramatic final game to win 6-4 7-5 6-4 and claim his second major title.

The final game was a battle in itself, with Murray seeing three match points slip by from 40-0 and fending off three Djokovic break points with some fearless hitting, before the Serb netted a backhand to end the contest.

After a gruelling three hours and 10 minutes in searing temperatures, Murray had finally followed in the footsteps of Fred Perry's 1936 win at the All England Club.

$2M of cocaine found in ceiling of Pearson airport bathroom

Border officers recovered an estimated $2-million in suspected cocaine last month from the ceiling of a bathroom in Toronto Pearson International Airport, the Canadian Border Services Agency said on Thursday.

The CBSA said they don't know the origins of the 16 packages, weighing over 40 lbs, that were discovered on June 17.

Officers found the packages in the overhang above the bathroom stalls, along with a cellular phone, batteries, a charging cord and a charger. The packages were wrapped in plastic with orange and white tape reading "fragile" and "breakable."

The RCMP is now involved in the investigation which is ongoing.

"Toronto continues to be a shipping and trans-shipping point for local and other point drug smuggling," said Insp. Dean Dickson, with the RCMP Toronto airport detachment. "We are working together to ensure that we can address this smuggling." (CBC)

Avril Lavigne, Chad Kroeger wed on Canada Day

Singers Avril Lavigne and Chad Kroeger tied the knot on Canada Day in a ceremony in the south of France, according to media reports.

Lavigne, 28, of Napanee, Ont., and Kroeger, 38, of Hanna, Alta., exchanged vows in front of about 50 guests at Chateau La Napoule in Mandelieu, France (near Cannes).

The Nickelback frontman and the Sk8ter Boi singer were engaged last August, but wedding details had been kept under wraps. The romance blossomed after the two got together in February to co-write a song for Lavigne's next album.

The wedding was followed by a wild all-night party with drinking, dancing and fireworks, according to US Weekly.

There had been confusing tweets about a wedding over the weekend from the couple's close friends with a pre-wedding party on Saturday mistaken for the actual event. Instead, the Canadian rockers opted to wed on Monday, with a red and white theme to underscore the Canada Day timing.

It's the first wedding for Kroeger, and the second for Lavigne, who split from Sum 41's Deryck Whibley in October 2009 after three years of marriage.

Canada Day bomb plot

A man and a woman have been charged in an alleged al-Qaeda-inspired plot to place pressure cooker bombs at the provincial legislature in Victoria during crowded Canada Day celebrations, a scheme that B.C. Premier Christy Clark calls "profoundly shocking."

Amanda Marie Korody, believed to be about 30, and John Stewart Nuttall, 38, both of Surrey, B.C., have each been charged with conspiracy to commit an indictable offence, knowingly facilitating a terrorist activity and possession of an explosive substance.

The couple accused of trying to detonate pressure cooker bombs during Canada Day celebrations in Victoria have been described by a friend as "former street punks" who found Islam, but then exhibited increasingly odd religious behaviour before they were kicked out of a Surrey mosque.

Brazil have won the Confederations Cup after thrashing World and European champions Spain 3-0 in a one-sided final at a raucous Maracana Stadium. Fred scored twice and Neymar once for the rampant hosts while the stunned Spaniards endured a miserable night, missing a penalty and finishing with 10 men.

Brazil produced a breathtaking performance at the Maracana to overwhelm Spain and claim their third consecutive Confederations Cup title. Driven on by the passion of a fiercely partisan crowd, the five-time world champions signalled their intent ahead of next summer's World Cup by ending Spain's 29-match unbeaten record with a majestic display.

Brazil have not lost a competitive match on home soil since 1975 and you have to go back to 1934 to find the last time Spain had beaten them in a competitive match, home or away.
