Guantanamo Bay Felon Omar Khadr seeks bail pending US appeal

Colin Perkel  The Canadian PressFormer Guantanamo Bay inmate Omar Khadr is seeking bail pending disposition of his appeal in the United States against his disputed conviction for war crimes.

The bail hearing, set for March 24, would be Khadr’s first attempt at freedom since his return from a notorious U.S. prison in Cuba where he was held for eight years.

If successful, Khadr would live with his other Canadian lawyer, Dennis Edney, and go to school.

“It’s becoming clearer and clearer in the United States from recent cases that Omar’s convictions are invalid,” his lawyer, Nate Whitling, said from Edmonton on Friday.

New Document Shows Canadians Crying 'Fowl' Over Lack of Ethnic Chicken

Some people have been crying foul over the lack of ethnic chicken in Canada.

Agriculture Minister Gerry Ritz got an earful from customers who couldn't find particular poultry, a newly released document shows.

"Concerns about the availability of ethnic chicken have largely focused on supplies of specialty birds (e.g. chicken from the Silkie and Taiwanese breeds), kosher and Hong Kong chicken," the document says.

The Canadian Press obtained the four-page document under the Access to Information Act.

It says complaints flooded Ritz's office after the May 2013 closure of Toronto-based Chai Poultry, one of Canada's two suppliers of kosher chicken.

Chai Poultry sold its quota of chicken allocation to a halal processing plant based in the southern Ontario of town of Milton.

Comedy Central says the Canadian pop sensation will be the focus of its annual televised roast, in which panellists skewer a featured celebrity with biting remarks.

The “Comedy Central Roast of Justin Bieber” will tape in Los Angeles.

No air date has been set.

Previous roastees have included James Franco, David Hasselhoff and Canadians William Shatner and Pamela Anderson.

In a statement, Comedy Central says the Stratford, Ont., singer has been asking the network “for a few years to roast him.”

The station says it “kept telling him to go create more source material first” and it’s “thrilled he listened.”

World Oil Prices Rise On Saudi Arabia's King Abdullah's Death

Oil prices rose on news of the death of Saudi Arabia's powerful King Abdullah, but the increase is likely to be short-lived without a cut in the kingdom's immense crude production.

The benchmark U.S. crude futures contract was up 71 cents to $47.02 a barrel at 0725 GMT on Friday. Brent crude, an international benchmark, was up 92 cents to $49.42 a barrel.

The small rise reflects added uncertainty about Saudi oil policy because the country's new absolute monarch, Abdullah's 79-year-old half brother Prince Salman, is in poor health.

"It is necessary to stay watchful about Saudi politics," said Oh Jeong-seok, head of commodity markets at state-run Korea Center for International Finance. "As he is nearly 80 years old and his health isn't in good condition, that itself is uncertain. The price of oil goes up when there is an uncertainty."

The list runs 44 typed pages. It includes 3greenmoms, makers of eco-friendly sandwich bags in Potomac, MD ($3,751); 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment in Toronto ($3.7 million) and the Banhat Rattan Bamboo Co-operative in Ho Chi Minh City ($1,596).

It owes $1,926 to the Retail Council of Canada and $433,248 to Roots Canada Ltd. Roots was behind the popular Beaver Canoe line of goods tailor-made for Target Canada.

It owes Revenue Quebec $6.529 million. It owes more than $12 million to the Canada Revenue Agency.

“Did I see this coming? No,” said Jennifer Carlson, founder, Baby Gourmet Foods Inc., an Edmonton-based company owed $62,701.

Two yr old shoots himself dead with dad's gun inside family car

Two yr old Kaleb Ahles shot himself dead with his father's gun which he found in the glove compartment of their family car. The sad incident happened yesterday January 21st . That could spell trouble for homeowners if mortgage rates rise, economists say.

"Given how high house prices are relative to household incomes, you'd only have to see a moderate increase in mortgage rates to have a really huge hit to affordability," said David Madani, Canada economist at Capital Economics.

The man charged with first-degree murder in Quebec’s 2012 election shooting has been given one last chance to find himself a lawyer ahead of his trial.

Quebec Superior Court Justice Guy Cournoyer authorized a 30-day delay in the case Monday to allow Richard Henry Bain to undergo a court-ordered evaluation that should take place next week.

The judge ordered Bain, 64, to find an attorney before the case resumes Feb. 20.

Bain is also charged with two counts of attempted murder stemming from an attack outside a downtown Montreal club where then-PQ leader Pauline Marois was toasting her party’s election victory on Sept. 4, 2012.

University of Dalhousie student suspended for Facebook posts he hadn't seen

A dentistry student who was part of a Facebook page that contained sexually violent content about female classmates was suspended largely because he clicked the "Like" button on one suggestive photograph, his lawyers said Wednesday.

Sarah MacIntosh said she was surprised to learn that her client, Ryan Millet, was penalized for that single action and his membership in a now notorious Facebook group linked to Dalhousie University's fourth-year dentistry class.

MacIntosh told a news conference that Dalhousie University concluded Millet was guilty of "blatant unprofessionalism" and, as a result, suspended his clinic privileges earlier this month based on six specific posts made in the Facebook group.

A cancer-stricken warrant officer who served with the Canadian military for nearly three decades is facing a long appeal process after Veterans Affairs denied his application for disability compensation.

Alain Vachon of Calgary spent 27 years in military service, which included deployments to Afghanistan, Kuwait, Bosnia and Kosovo, among other places. For the past two years, he has been battling Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, a form of cancer that affects the lymphatic system.

Vachon believes his exposure to depleted uranium at Camp Doha in Kuwait caused his illness.

Marijuana For Trauma Inc. has expanded its Restigouche Road facility to include the new room, saying it is a necessary support for Canadian Forces veterans and others suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

The vapour room will allow those who pay a $5 annual membership fee to try out different machines to vaporize their prescribed marijuana.

British Woman fakes own DEATH to get out of dating man she met online

According to the UK Mirror, 29-year-old Ann-Marie Gray faked her own death to avoid seeing a man she had decided wasn't Mr. Right.

After a third date with the poor fellow whom she had met on an online dating site, Gray decided that she didn't want to see him again. But when she tried to let him down gently, he didn't get the hint.

Even when she flat-out told him it wasn't working, he persisted.

 The looming threat of sliding oil prices forced the Bank of Canada to drop its trend-setting interest rate Wednesday, a surprising move that shows just how much the country's economic outlook has soured in a matter of months.

The central bank, which nudged its key rate down to 0.75 per cent from one per cent, said the rapid oil-price collapse has created many unknowns around economic growth in the oil-exporting nation.

Until the effects of oil's late-2014 tailspin started to trickle through, Canada appeared to be on the cusp of a promising post-recession rebound — and inching closer to a rate hike.

"The drop in oil prices is unambiguously negative for the Canadian economy," governor Stephen Poloz said.

"Canada's income from oil exports will be reduced, and investment and employment in the energy sector are already being cut."
