IBM To Add 250 Jobs In New Brunswick

Just a day after announcing 100 new jobs in Fredericton, IBM says it plans to add 110 jobs in Saint John and another 40 in Florenceville-Bristol.

David Drury, general manager of global technology services at IBM Canada, says the new jobs will create a hub of IT and security technology expertise in New Brunswick.

The jobs, which pay roughly $50,000 to $75,000 each, will be created over the next three years.

The province is paying 12-thousand dollars per job as a payroll rebate, for a total of $3 million.

Premier Brian Gallant says the expansion of IBM's operations in New Brunswick means valuable information technology jobs and a strong foundation for continued growth in the cybersecurity sector in the province.

RIP Toronto Most Famous Mayor Rob Ford

Rob Ford, one of Toronto’s most prolific and polarizing mayors and councilors, has passed away at the age of 46.

Ford was pronounced dead at Mount Sinai Hospital Tuesday morning after battling a rare and aggressive form of cancer called pleomorphic liposarcoma since 2014.

“With heavy hearts and profound sadness, the Ford family announces the passing of their beloved son, brother, husband, and father, Councillor Rob Ford earlier today at the age of 46,” his family said in a release.

Canadian Mother Charges Adult Son $1,000 For Not Appreciating Her Financial Support

A Canadian Reddit user by the username Chalipo who lives with his parents shared a bill his mom gave to him for being an 'unappreciative assole'. Chalipo's said his mother decided to charge him for all the ways in which she'd been supporting him.

 The total bill for the mum's support for the past 13 months summed up to $29,176.09 USD.
The Redditor says he attends school full-time, works part-time, and also has an internship but that his parents have helped him with a roof over his head, working internet, and a stocked fridge.

She also charged him for a fifth share of the house's electricity bill (called Hydro in parts of Canada), the gas bill, internet, and cable etc.

Beijing Is Now The Billionaire Capital Of The World

Beijing is the new "Billionaire Capital of the World.'' The Chinese capital has overtaken the New York as home to the most billionaires -- 100 to 95 -- according to Hurun, a Shanghai firm that publishes a monthly magazine and releases yearly rankings and research about the world's richest people and their spending habits.

The study, which comes months after reports suggested China now has more billionaires than the United States, highlights how China's elite are continuing to accrue vast wealth despite a wobbling stock market and cooling economy.

Different tabulations of wealth, such as the Hurun Report and the Forbes list, have historically produced somewhat different results depending on their methodology.

Rupert Hoogewerf, the founder of Hurun, attributed China's explosive wealth creation to Chinese market regulators allowing a flood of new initial public offerings after holding back new IPOs for several years.

Hoogewerf said his wealth calculations were made using stock prices as of Jan. 15, which means they took into account the Chinese market's 40 per cent tumble over the past half year.

US Falsely Accuses Toronto Student Of Mass School Stabbing

A U.S. website misidentified a Toronto university student as the teen charged in a mass stabbing attack at an Ontario high school, leading to a slew of hateful online comments against her.

This week, a 14-year-old girl allegedly injured both staff and students in a stabbing attack at Dunbarton High School in Pickering, Ont. Now charged with 15 offences, she cannot be named by law that protects the identity of young offenders.

Zahra Vaid, a 21-year-old studying at the University of Toronto, had been initially been interviewed for a Globe and Mail story about the accused's blog. After that article was published, Vaid was named as the suspect in a post on The Gateway Pundit , a right-wing political website.

"An innocent mistake, perhaps? Not at all," Vaid wrote in a Facebook post.

The Gateway Pundit post was originally called, "Canadian Muslim Girls on Mass Stabbing Spree – 8 Injured."

Double standards are alive and thriving in politics. To prove that, one B.C. mayor wore the same suit for well over a year and waited for someone to notice and say something about it.

No one did.

Coquitlam Mayor Richard Stewart said his 15-month social experiment only came to an end after a councillor made an offhand remark about his “plain, off-the-rack, boring, dark blue” suit.

“The comment was actually because three councillors had worn grey suits, and I was in a dark blue suit. So it was a flippant ‘Didn’t you get the memo?' comment,’ Stewart wrote on Facebook Monday.

In a 1,300-word note titled “What if the mayor wore the same suit for a year?” — most of it written in 2014 to reflect his thoughts when he began his test — Stewart talked about his experience.

He made reference to women in B.C.’s legislature — who make up 25 per cent of all MLAs — and how they face criticism based solely on what they choose to wear.

Kenyan 22-month Old Girl Undergoes Successful Skull Defect Surgery in Canada

The 22 month-old girl, Fidelis Muthoni from Makuyu in Murang’a county, Kenya who was suffering from frontal encephalocele underwent a free operation in Toronto, Canada to remove a bone growth on her face.

The Canadian doctors volunteered to operate on her for free when her father Kenneth Kinuthia met them in Kiambu county during a medical camp. Muthoni’s plight was highlighted when the family accused her uncle, Hope Foundation founder Joseph Wanjau, of misappropriating the ticket money.

The family said Wanjau voluntered to raise cash on social media to assist them  but he later withrew the Sh2.8 million raised without their consent which made it impossible for Muthoni to be flown to Canada.

Fortunately, Kenya’s President Uhuru Kenyatta intervened and bought air tickets for mother and child to travel before the appointment was called off.

RIP! BC Mourns Five Snowmobilers, Eight Injured In Northeastern Avalanche

Five people have been killed in an avalanche in northeastern British Columbia.

The incident occurred Friday afternoon near the town of McBride, which is located near the Alberta border, and about 500 km west of Edmonton.

The BC Coroners’ Service said the very large avalanche happened in an area where a group of people were snowmobiling.

Avalanche Canada said in a statement posted on its website Friday that it has received a report of “what appears to be a very large, significant event near McBride.”

“We do know that it was human triggered,” said the statement.

Changing weather conditions “may have produced stresses in the snowpack capable of producing large avalanches,” the statement went on. “Please be cautious this weekend.”

CMHC flags housing market risks in Toronto, Saskatoon, Regina. The federal housing agency says there is a risk of correction in Canadian housing markets in several cities, especially Toronto, Saskatoon and Regina,  because of overvaluation and overbuilding of real estate.

Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation looks at housing markets in 15 Canadian cities every quarter, in an effort to detect housing bubbles.

A Blessing In Disguise: Low Dollar Draws Tourists To Canada

 From British Columbia to Montreal, the low Canadian dollar is proving a boon to the tourism sector.

Dragged down by cheap oil and an international slump in commodity prices, the dollar is trading at around 70 cents against the greenback and enticing Americans to travel north of the border.

"We're getting more reservations at the last minute from Americans planning trips for the weekend," says Eve Pare, head of the Hotel Association of Greater Montreal.

Montreal-area hotels in December made more than $40 million, up more than nine per cent from a year earlier, Pare noted.

The city's tourism bureau said last summer's season — between June and August — saw a 10 per cent increase year over year in the number of American tourists crossing the border into Quebec.

For Katie, 20, a McGill University student from New York State, the low Canadian dollar means her tuition is "basically nothing."

Canada's highest income earners face the prospect of higher taxes under a new Liberal majority government, but those in the middle can expect a break.

Keith MacIntyre, a tax specialist at accounting and consulting firm Grant Thornton, says people in the middle tax brackets could see a reduction in the federal income tax they'll be required to pay if Justin Trudeau's promises are put in place.

"Certainly people in those brackets will be looking forward to that in terms of additional cash flow," MacIntyre said from Halifax.

One person has been arrested, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau confirmed from an emergency press conference in Davos, Switzerland.

“We all grieve with and stand with the community of La Loche and the province of Saskatchewan on this terrible and tragic day,” Trudeau said.

RIP Celine Dion Loses Husband and Brother to Cancer

 

Pop megastar Celine Dion has suffered double family tragedy: Her brother Daniel Dion has died of cancer, days after her husband René Angélil succumbed to the same ailment.

The Canadian pop singer's rep confirmed the news to E! News on Saturday, hours after it was revealed Daniel suffered from cancer of the throat, tongue and brain and did not have long to live. He was one of Celine's 13 siblings. Their sister Claudette had recently told Le Journal de Montréal that family members, including their mother, had flocked to his bedside.

The newspaper quoted the family as saying that Daniel passed away at 5 a.m. on Saturday. "He was ready and he no longer suffers," Claudette told Le Journal de Montréal. "It was serene."

100 Up: Twitter to expand tweets from 140 characters to 10,000

Twitter's most beloved features is set to change. The company is planning to extend its 140-character limit to as many as 10,000, according to a person familiar with the matter. Twitter’s fans were quick to complain that such a change, expected to be announced by the end of March, would spoil the brevity and speed of the real-time service.
The character limit that forces users to pen snappy tweets could give way to the longer essays found on Facebook. It could transform Twitter into more of a public blogging platform rather than one that is succinct and well-suited to quips and breaking news headlines.

This person said, however, that Twitter Inc. is aiming to retain the look and feel of the user timeline. For tweets that are longer than 140 characters, users will have to click and expand to see the rest of the text. As users write beyond the 140-character limit, Twitter will signal to them that they have crossed the threshold as a way to encourage brevity.

Extreme! NorthKorea court sentences Canadian pastor to life imprisonment for 'crimes against the state'

 

A Supreme Court in North Korea has sentenced Hyeon Soo Lim, who pastors the Light Korean Presbyterian Church in Toronto to life imprisonment with hard labour after he was convicted of committing 'crimes against the state'. Pastor Soo Lim who had been in detention since February was given the sentence after a brief trial.

 He had earlier appeared at a news conference organized by North Korean authorities in Pyongyang in July and admitted to plotting to overthrow the North Korean state.

Toronto MBA Graduate Arrested After Randomly Stabbing A Stranger

 

On Tuesday afternoon, Toronto police arrested Rohinie Bisesar, an MBA and financial district regular, and charged her with attempted murder. Police believe Bisesar walked into a downtown drugstore Friday afternoon and hacked a knife into a stranger’s chest, wounding her grievously. Then she walked away.

Bisesar’s story made international news when police released her name Monday. She appeared online to be as far from a common criminal as could be. She went to one of Canada’s best business schools, at York University. She worked in finance and consulting. Her LinkedIn page featured a slew of glowing praise from former colleagues.

Down Payment For Mortgage Increases to 10% On Homes Over $500K

The federal government is increasing the minimum down payment required to buy a home for more than $500,000 in an effort to cool the red-hot housing markets in Toronto and Vancouver, but some economists say the impact on housing activity will be minimal.

Finance Minister Bill Morneau made the announcement in Ottawa on Friday. "We are looking at ways to ensure our market is stable and we want to make sure people are making the appropriate decision as they buy a new home," Morneau said during a news conference.

Starting in February, CMHC will require a 10 per cent down payment on the portion of any mortgage it insures over $500,000.

Social media has offered the current generation one of the most unique platform to connect with family and friends seamlessly real-time. Facebook is the colossus giant ruling this space and have at least 2 out of every 7 person connected on the social networking triangle. You can easily share photos, videos, send messages and update personal status. The first thing Facebook ask you is to update your status, it goes like ‘what’s on your mind?’ You know deeply down your answer – you crave for attention and love. In the real sense, Facebook can connect you with people and at most give you ‘likes’ but it is not capable of giving love. You seemly cannot judge the quality of life by the number of Facebook likes.

Edmonton Eskimos Beat Ottawa Redblacks to Win 14th GreyCup

After a ten year drought, Edmonton Eskimos won their fourteenth Grey Cup. Thanks to an aggressive coach they have in person of Chris Jones. Jordan Lynch scored a one-yard touchdown on third down with 3:22 left, sending the Edmonton Eskimos to a 26-20 victory over the Ottawa REDBLACKS in the 103rd Grey Cup presented by Shaw.

Mike Reilly who was named MVP threw touchdown passes to Adarius Bowman and Akeem Shavers while completing 21 of 25 passes for 269 yards, while Edmonton’s defence allowed only four second-half points to guide the Eskimos to their first Grey Cup since 2005.

I once heard the parrots in a neighbor’s main lobby whisper that legacy is for the blind. I tried to reason like I always do with species beneath human best intelligence. But then, I was so furious I want to get into the discussion and have a debate like one of them “fellas”.

The unthoughtful may choose to forget, the careless care less anyways, the hardened may block reasoning, or newbies become blind to the sacrifices of past heroes but history will never forget those who fought hard for what we all enjoy even if taken for granted. Time passes all and moments speed by our notice but history will always remember those who fought hard, not the chickens.

If you were to go on a date with history, will history remember how hard you fought or care less because you are always looking for the easy. How hard are you fighting for your career, marriage, family, kids, spouse, community, nation, humanity? How hard are you fighting for your life?

Governance in the 21st century has become a playground for who has the ball rolling. There was a time in the world where we were all ruled by a sect. The selected few had to come from a given family name and history. It has nothing to do about the “best hand of rule” but the willful sovereignty of the sect. As the human race evolved through civilization and modernization, the Greek first demonstrated representative democracy in the 6th century as a political system of government. 

Centuries past by, new world leaders have emerged from Egypt to Italy to England to Germany and now United States of America. Apparently as the lion of the western world, America has been characterized as the main proponent of democracy in the rule of nations. Concurrently we have a political system that is always ready to provoke change and challenge the norm. What could not have been possible in ages past is fast becoming living realities.
