Colin Fast MetroAn engineering company that has a name now more closely associated with a terrorist group is looking to make a switch.
Despite a long track record and a well-established reputation in the engineering community, the ISIS Canada Resource Centre — Intelligent Sensing for innovative Structures — is now looking for a new name to avoid any confusion with the terrorist group ISIS — the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria.
“As a result of the recent attention to our company’s name, we are currently in a process of changing it,” said Dr. Dagmar Svecova, director of the ISIS Canada Resource centre and an engineering professor at the University of Manitoba, where the centre is located.
“We have been known under this name across Canada for the last nearly 20 years, so it’s going to be a challenge for sure,” she added.
According the organization’s website — ISISCanada.com — it has become the “go-to centre” for engineers and contractors to learn about using fiber-reinforced concrete or structural health monitoring technology in infrastructure projects.
Part of its research involves testing the strength of various construction materials, and developing new technology to build “smart” bridges and buildings.
Recently, an immigration agency in Halifax and a jewellery shop in Calgary also said they were removing ISIS from their names.
